I am about to undergo this upgrade.

Do i get the choice of doing a "clean install"?

In other words, will the upgrade format my hard drive and then install windows 10?

Hi - when I upgraded my Laptop I had already performed a clean install of Windows 7 - but during the install of Windows 10 it didn't offer a clean install - just an install over the existing Win 7 . Does that help?

In todays world one is likely forced to use Windows but anything else by MS should be replaced by other programs.

MS Office? Go for LibreOffic.

I've been using OpenOffice for several years. It meets all of my needs and best of all it is free.

For some time it looked like OpenOffice would either die or be restricted too much because of Oracles business behavior, so a lot devs went on and continued development on their own and that project was called LibreOffice.

I think you can call LibreOffice the successor of OpenOffice.

Does that mean the existing installations of Open Office will someday fail to work?

I use it to create PDF files for my work.

Well Apaches OpenOffice is almost dead(lack of active developers and code contributions, and likely no one around to do the big development anymore) and the commercial StarOffice was discontinued years ago, I doubt that Apaches OO gets back on track as all the volunteers, contributors, etc. went to LibreOffice, so just like every other software that isn't supported anymore these OO versions will sooner or later fail.

Personally I did some PDFs a while back with LibreOffice, it worked good although I wonder if an extra program to create PDF wouldn't give more options but I think for most things LibreOffice should handle creating PDFs just fine.

Here a little timeline, you see how dense the releases of LibreOffice are.

You can see Apache didn't do much and is unlikely to continue but if anyone has mac he may want to look at NeoOffice.
