It was sometime during the early summer of 2000 that we released Campaign Eckmuhl, first of the Napoleonic Battles series by John Tiller Software via HPS Simulations. I had never done one of these games and definitely had a lot to learn.

Mark Adams and I had met online and we got to work on the artwork. Poor Mark ended up doing the small "campaign reference maps" that go with the the campaign file. Later on I would do those ....

We had a great group of playtesters. Paco would remain with me throughout the long journey.

Folks were eager to see a new game from John Tiller on the Napoleonic era. What they got was less graphically than they expected but we offered the customer more battles than what they had previously gotten. It was a tradeoff.

Imagine Campaign Leipzig ... with just Leipzig in the "box." Pretty much tells you how far we have gotten.

While I miss the hand painted maps and the extra zoom level for 3D the ability to make up larger maps was a huge bonus.

Figure that Prelude to Waterloo and Waterloo games by Talonsoft left out Wavre and a lot of area that the JTS Waterloo game includes. And taking the map editor we could easily add in more area to include all the way over to Liege to add in a "what if Napoleon knocks out Wellington and turns on the Prussians" type campaign.

So here we are 15 years later. Glad to have been able to work on the Eckmuhl project and the many others. We have lots of good scenarios to play and of course ... there is always the Scenario Editor to put out our own spin on things. :frenchcool

Messrs.,

Perhaps I am biased because it was the first game I worked on, but after all these years Eckmuhl remains my favorite campaign. The French army is no longer the juggernaut of the 1805 - 1807 years, but is still a powerful machine with excellent leaders. Meanwhile the reorganized Austrian army, with its nascent corps structure and strategic surprise/initiative, is an equally powerful adversary. Lastly, the campaign is played out on a huge battlefield with a myriad of options ensuring that no two encounters are ever quite the same.

Regards,

Paco

Wow! I have been playing these game a long time. I played 5 Days in April vs Drew Stone about 10 years ago and I thought it was fabulous. A few years back Tom Moore and I played almost 300 turns to a bloody draw. This year, I have played three scenarios from Eckmuhl. The French advantage in cavalry and in the quality of Davout's corps provides a great challenge to the more concentrated Austrian forces. Certainly the best army Austria fields in any of the games...

The scenarios I've played in Eckmuhl I've enjoyed very much! Very fond of this one and Wagram too actually... :)

Eckmuhl still gets plenty of play time in the Club too! :D

Maybe someday a "20 days in Sachen/Sachen-Anhalt" Campaign for the Leipzig game. ROFL

I would combine all of the maps together including Dresden on over to Leipzig and add in the missing areas ...

Of course none of our systems could open up that large of a map file! :frenchcool1:
