| Post subject: | The Battle of Tournay 1794 |
Coming on the heels of the French victory at the Battle of Tourcoing was the Battle of Tournay (Tournai), 22 June 1794. There the Allies had regrouped at Tournay (southeast of Tourcoing) from their loss 4 days before and were entrenched awaiting the advance of the French columns of Souham and Bonnaud. The fighting was tense and the Pont a Chin position changed hands some 5 times before Fox's British brigade prevailed over the exhausted French defenders. The battle changed nothing for the fate of Holland and the Austrian Netherlands and later in June at the Battle of Fleurus (26 June) the Allies would lose again using their outmoded column strategy. The Austrian military leaders gave up on the idea of continuing the war there and withdrew their forces forcing the British and the rest of the Allies there to fall back into Hanover. Holland fell along with the rest of the Austrian Netherlands. The French had pressed the Allies behind the Rhine. It still is amazing that after all of those years the Austrians continued to use disjointed column tactics up until 1805. One explanation for their use at the Battle of Tourcoing had to do with the inability of their forces to march abreast. The country confining them to making wide flanking maneuvers. It was obvious that it would have been better to reinforce the front line columns instead of advancing on such a wide frontage. |
