Interesting indeed!

I helped on one English battlefield excavation some years ago at Towton. Fascinating stuff.

Wondering where they got the 55,000 dead count. Wiki lists the losses for the French at 25,000-40,000 dead, wounded or missing. For the Austrians 30,000-41,250 dead, wounded or missing. If you go with the high numbers that is 81,250 total casualties. Surely the 55,000 dead count cannot be true.

Wagram was the largest land battle prior to the Battle of Leipzig. Indeed it lasted two days but the second day was when the most losses occurred. I tend to think that the figure of 32,000 French losses and 38,000 Austrians is probably close to the truth. Deducting out those that were wounded or missing I think that 18,000-26,000 dead is probably closer to the truth. I am also thinking that there were many of the wounded that died right after the battle or later after they were borne away to the city of Vienna (French side) or other parts (Austrian).

Bottom line: I doubt they will find 55,000 dead bodies in graves on the battlefield.

Indeed. I think that figure is way ovfer the top. It's possible that if all mass graves are identified at a site one can get an idea of total fatalities during the battle. Then add some extras for those that died later on. I suspect the figures obtained are nowhere near the quoted figures.
