Went to see the movie the Friday after Thanksgiving, was very enthused as Ridley Scott has done some great movies, and Phoenix was great in Gladiator, thouogh at times you think he was playing the joker from Batman during Napoleon

Black Hawk Down
Kingdom and Heavan - Directors cut fills in the detaile the theatrical relase left you trying to figure out
Gladiator
Alien
Blade Runner
The Duelists
Non war movie which I enjoyed It was a great Year

I also understand that history and cinematic liberties are not followed that closely - which I get

The movie - was a total bomb - Really should have been titiled Napoleon and Josephine

He was portayed as a meek cuckold, and perhaps to some extent he was as it concerned josephine who was about 40 when Napoleon met her he was in his middle twenties - the movie shows it the opposite not a biggie, or that he was not at Marie Antoinette's beheading. How he was portrayed does not elude the confindence of someone who ruled Europe for 20years. He is speaking to a Frenchman throught the movie and perhaps I was slow but realized it was his brother Jerome. There is no continuity, and it seemd to me they threw together a series of vignettes to try to make it a movie. No background on the Egyptian campaign, No chemistry between Napoleon and Josphine, Talleyrand is srinkled in for a messenger with no forethought as to why, Austerlitz is not even close there is no fog at all, Britsh leave their redoubts which they did not have at Waterloo and march downhill to form a square. Wellington's appearance is a cookie crumb, and they never met, Ney, is never seen except for a brief appearance and has black hair not red
Never explained why Napoleon was upset about boats

Wanted to see a good movie of Napoleon so I watched Waterloo with Rod Steiger and Chris Plummer - Dino De Laurentis got it right. and has the Prussians arrive on the right side while in Napoleon they arrive on the wrong side, and is portrayed giviing up the battle as Ellis did in Die Hard drinking his Coke

Just sad and very disappointed

To me, the biggest disappointment was the 'Total War'-like battles. It's just plain ridiculous. The best thing I could do is to watch 'Waterloo' (1970) and 'War and Peace' (1967). To me, nothing has yet surpassed these kinds of scenes.

I haven't seen it yet so can't give a personal view.

Friends that have seen it have told me they enjoyed it, they however have no interest in the history of Napoleon and his times. Those that I know who do have an interest in Napoleon have said not to bother.

I think I might wait for the extended version as it may include some of the missing history.

Back in 1981 I saw Napoleon by Abel Gance, complete with live score during the Edinburgh International Film Festival. A 5 1/2 hour masterpiece of the silent cinema illustrating Napoleon's life from his early school days up to the year 1797. This was I believe to be the first of 6 films on the subject, unfortunately however, he couldn't raise the funds to make the remaining 5 a reality. If only....

It simply bit to much off with its scope. It needed to be a mini-series to give the man a fair shake if you are going to tackle his whole life. I found myself mostly bored while watching it. They give no other characters in his life any real time to flesh out (besides Josephine), they barely ley flesh him out. Phoenix’s portrayal is not all bad, but pretty cardboard like for most of it, I dont think they gave him much leeway to be more realistic. Im just disappointed. Like mentioned, maybe they will release a directors cut which will be 4 or 5 hours, but what we got is pretty abysmal in my opinion. The battle scenes are also inaccurate which angered me some, at least get the fighting right! Sheesh.

I would give it a very scientific and purely objective rating of 4 out of 11 stars.

The one with Christian Clavier as Napoleon?

When I read the first negative reviews of the new movie I did dig out my old DVDs of this series and watched them within a week or two. I really like them and think the series strikes a fine middle ground between the personal relationships and battles - all with enough historical accuracy to be a nice watch.

Wow, Pinehurst is a PGA tour event locale. Very challenging course.

Very happy for you and our family. Way to go, Art. :frenchsalute:
