Question about French Infantry regiment numbers:

Were there the same numbers for Legere and Ligne regiments?? Like there could be a 2e Legere and 2e Ligne in the same Armee??

Also, were there the same numbers for each nationality like a 1e Ligne Regiment (French) and 1e Ligne Regiment (Italien)??

Thanks,
--Scott

Yes the French had ligne and legere regiments with the same number in the same army. Take the Order of Battle for the French 6th division at Quatre Bras.

1st brigade: GdB Baudin
1st legere regiment
2nd legere regiment

2nd brigade: Soye
1st ligne regiment
2nd ligne regiment

By 1813 the total number of ligne regiments was 156 and the number of legere regiments was (I think) 37.

Regarding foreign armies, their numbering probably depended whether they were vassals of France or allies.

An excellent resource for the French regiments and some of teh other nations can be found here:

http://www.napoleon-series.org/

Select the Military Section from the drop down menu, then select the link to Organisation, Strategy and Tactics. Look for the link under Tony Broughton to French Infantry Regiments and the Colonels who led them, or any other that takes your interest

Regards

Mark
