The German press is actually advertising him as the first German pope since Hadrian VI (1522-23). However, Hadrian was actually from the Spanish Netherlands. Then there is Stephan IX (1057-58), but he was from Lorraine, nowadays France. Both, thus, were from the Holy Roman Empire, but I wouldn't count them as German in any sense of the word. Which brings us to Victor II (1055-57), who was from Eichstaett in Bavaria (just outside the Eckmuhl map, I'd want to add). I think he was truly the last German pope before Benedict XVI. Which makes it 948 years. [:)]
