I have been thinking for a while about this...

Why are some games starting as draws and others as defeats or victories ?

Should not the starting victory conditions always be draws ?

No.

There are situations where an army starts in a losing position, and the status quo only ensures its defeat. Waterloo is a good example.

Strategically, Napoleon was still losing the campaign, even after winning Quatre-Bras and Ligny. If he were to stand around all day, he would lose the campaign. He had to win the battle to win the campaign. He started out behind the 8-ball on the 18th, and was never able to get out in front.

Anything but a win, for him, was a loss. Therefore he must have started out with a loss, since a draw at the end of the battle, would still have found him the loser.

Another good example would be the Landshut scenario that opens up an Eckmuhl campaign game. The Austrians MUST break the river barrier and get up the road. That is their strategic objective. So long as they are on the wrong side of the river, they have lost.

Having a game start as a win or lose encourages one side or the other to attack rather than have two sides just sit there and timidly look at one another.

And in the end if the player wants to use the editor and create a copy of the scenario and modify it to be something different then that avenue is always open as well.

You could make a copy of the .cpd campaign file and then using the Campaign Editor find the scenario you changed and then change the name of the scenario to be your own creation.

Much the same if you dont like a branch you can bypass it rather easily as well.
