Just got Windows XP up and running

I had lines in my old ( Windows 98 SE ) Autoexec.bat file that deleted *.XXX and *.YYY files.

How is this done under Windows XP ?

I think I just typed the commands in notepad and saved as a .bat file. I've narrowed mine down to the folder where all my games are so that it doesn't have to search the whole HD for the files:

cd c:\games\
del /s *.yyy
del /s *.xxx

Funny, I use exactly the same one. Only mine closes with "exit".

But I understand John used to have these lines in his autoexec.bat. I admit I didn't recall that Win 98 actually still used an autoexec.bat but XP sure as hell doesn't. So I guess, John, you just need a separate batch file. I have mine sitting on my desktop and run it before I close down the computer.

Mine seems to exit by itself without needing the word "exit"[8D].

It's a pity the games themselves can't delete the files because I don't always remember to run the .bat file.

You will probably find that the file is ZERO bytes.

You could probably just add the same lines to your Autoexec.bat file that you used in Win98. The format that Anthony Barlow used are good if all games are in the default HPS folder, so, using that format:

cd x:\program files\HPS Simulations\ (Where x is your hard drive)
del /s *.yyy
del /s *.xxx

The /s is needed to recurse through all sub-folders.

Or, just make a CLEAN.BAT file using notepad.

There are a lot of other BATCH file tricks you can put into the BAT file, but the above is sufficient.

It is getting HARDER and HARDER to remember those batch file commands.
@echo off, CLS

Oh, the memories!!![;)][:p]

Mssrs.,

Inspired by your posts, I immediately added the suggested lines to my Win98 SE autoexec.bat file. Alas, after an hour of trying innumerable combinations it simply didn't work on my PC[B)].

I first tried the following:

cd D:\HPS\
del /s *.yyy
del /s *.xxx

This led to "invalid parameter" messages.

I then tried:

cd D:\HPS\Campaign Eckmuhl\
del *.yyy
del *.xxx

and got "invalid path" messages for my efforts[xx(].

What am I doing wrong[?]

Assuming you boot into C drive yuou might try this...

- First you have to switcvh to your D Drive by doing this...:

D:

then you can use your lines

cd D:\HPS\Campaign Eckmuhl\
del *.yyy
del *.xxx

I will sent you a file called "cleanup_paco.bat" that will search your "C" and "D" drives and delete ANY ???.XXX and ???.YYY files for you. NO, IT WILL NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF A SHOWER, Sir Compte![:D]

This is what is in the .BAT file:
cd c:\
del /s *.yyy
del /s *.xxx
cd d:/
del /s *.yyy
del /s *.xxx

This is a modified file from Bill Peters, but it is STILL a good one.[;)]

Please put this someplace where you will remember to use it. It MAY go in the root folder of your "C" drive, but you may put it in one of your game FOLDERS and use it after sending a PBEM turn.
