<br />[quote][i]Wellington's forces battled the French all day, held the field at the end of the day, Prussians made a contribution that drew off some of French reserves and triggered and sustained the French rout. By holding the field, Wellington had brought about Napoleon's defeat whether Blucher arrived that evening or not until the next morning. The French having failed to defeat the Allied army could not have faced the Prussians the next day.

So, I figure, from his perspective, Wellington was perfectly entitled to claim victory. But maybe I am missing something!

Yes it is and from our perspective it is the Allies would not have stood had we not arrived when we did, and we would not have stood at Ligny if it was not for the Anglo's at Quatre Bras. The point is bothsides were needed to beat Nappy!! [:D]

Mark,
sorry but it's not a question of the point of view. Have a look on several regimental histories (British too!) or the reports from the different officers of foreign armies attached to the British "Staff". After the battle the British army was not able to keep fighting but having the honot to stop Napoleaon. AND the French army was not really beaten. Sure, no way for Nappy to win the war after this disaster but still able to eat the British at breakfest.[:D]
I'm not the meaning that Blucher was a brilliant General but in combination with Gneisenau the Prussians was a hard nut to crack.

And their perspective carries more weight than Wellington's because...

I'm not trying to say that Wellington's view is gospel, but the suggestion that the Duke deliberately distorted his report is bounded about on the basis that the observations of other officers is gospel. Somewhere between all this lies the truth, but the report of any one officer should not be discounted because it does not fit with the others. It may be the facts as that individual perceived them. And who but the army commander had the greatest perspective of the battle?

I once read somewhere, 'No matter what you believe, it is true for you'. So, for me, no matter what I read from Wellington, or others, I have to accept that for them, what they have written is true.

There are, of course exceptions to this, the main one being every time a British politician opens their mouth[:0][:0][:D]

Perhaps, but we'll never know [;)]

Blucher was not brilliant, but was certainly tenacious. The Prussian nut was severely cracked at Ligny and it was his strength of will that kept them in the theatre. Just as at Bautzen, where for me, it was Blucher's tenacity was the key to preventing Napoleon gaining the decisive victory he needed. Incredible leader, even if he knew only one direction[:D].

Regards

Mark
