I seem to recall there was a Talonsoft naval game called Age of Sail 2. Having recently read quite a bit of Napoleonic naval history, I'm quite keen to give it a crack. Has anyone around here played it and would anyone be interested in a game - I'm hoping to pick it up for cheap on eBay.

Peter, I never played it, but from what I heard, unless you get a whole boatload of patches, it's more or less unplayable. Not sure if they ever did get it up to something resembling reasonable or not.

Gee, I wonder if they went to work for Paradox...

You might check the www.navalwarfare.net site. They have a game for sale called Age of Sail Salvo. There is a demo file you can down load to see how it works. I can't tell if it is related to the old Age of Sail games though. New publisher any way.

We used to have a navy in the club that played Age of Sail 1. That game is alot of fun to play online as long as both players agreed to not ram ships (including their own) as that caused a sync loss.

The navy lasted a year and then we pulled down the pennants.

BG Schlueter and Stuart Wilson are among the members that were in the navy. It was alot of fun and I often miss the old days of running out and loading and firing.

Even bought an AOS2. IMHO a GREAT game, just those bugs (crashes, my ship warped inside an island, hardly finding its way back into sea) ...

AOS 2 was a big let down...[xx(] Too easy against the AI if playing solo.[:(]

Maybe this new game could be used instead
when it comes out and it is also turn-based.[:)]

There is a demo is available.

Ah. A blast from the past! Buggy game. You need a boatload of patches indeed.
The best bit for me were the fora at Akella and Talonsoft; boy did people get worked up about the game. Flame wars aplenty. Akella eventually closed theirs down which was a sad day for me. I have to stick my hand up and say I was at least partly to blame for its demise by starting a thread entitled "are there any other girls out there playing this game?" and awaited the inevitable storm. I do miss some of the folks from that board.

I bought it cheap a few years ago. Even with patches it's still buggy and it never reached its full potential. However, saying that it's still fun if you fancy something different and have half an hour spare here and there. I wouldn't pay much for it though.

Hmm seems like it's not worth the hassle - even for a couple of squid.

Thanks for the link Glyn, be interesting to see how that game turns out. Do you know of any other similar Napoleonic naval games?

In the meantime I think I'll continue waiting for Pirates to come out on the X-Box. I was obsessed by the Amiga version: hopefully this'll be as good.

Cheers,

For me £10 would be too much for it. My kids have Pirates of the Carribean for the XBOX and that's actually quite good, with lots of immersive sea battles and boarding actions to be had and the graphics are great. If you need a naval action fix you could do worse.
