Perhaps a possible solution might be that units that can form extended line must do so in order to fire when deployed in line?

Alternatively - a solution that wouldn't require an engine change -perhaps reduce stacking to say 1250 and alter the OOB so that all units that are over 600 strong are broken in two. (Perhaps this can be done by forming them into extended line without bothering to actually alter the OOB file)

In fact, this isn't just an issue of units firing in line and being a better/worse target for artillery, consider road movement for instance - three large Austrian units can make much more effective use of road movement than six small French units.

Rich - there are all sorts of fixes that appeal to me.

I think that one is to allow more than 2000 men to assault. Have forces from say four hexes be allowed to melee but only the stacking limit enter the hex. Have a routine for coordinated and uncoordinated assaults based on brigade affiliation. If its not from the same brigade then it isnt coordinated and the strengths are reduced or something like that.

Lots of ideas.
