I recently concluded a pair of mirror games with Ensign Wilkes to aid his transition from ACW to Napoleonic warfare. We used the #000_Getting_Started scenario as it was small and did contain elements of all three arms. As I am unfamiliar with that particular title, I performed a little playtesting of the game engine on the side to see how it performed as compared to Austerlitz. I must admit that I was somewhat perplexed at the results I got for cavalry actions. Specifically:

1.) Prussian heavy cavalry and French line cavalry are both multiplied by 0.75 when attacking enemy cavalry.

2.) Rather than the melee force multipliers being applied seperately to the attacker and defender as in Austerlitz, the modifiers tend to the reduced and only applied to one side (e.g. 80/60 in Austerlitz would be 20/0 in Jena). Mathematically, these would not yield the same results.

I know that Austerlitz is the most recent release and represents the culmination of the experience gained from the previous titles, but I am curious as to the differences in the Jena game engine. Particularly the rationale for reducing the effectiveness of heavy cavalry in the attack. Is Jena just "old technology"?

Have never seen that. Again, if you have a GAME ENGINE question send it along to Rich Hamilton at HPS Support please.

As outlined in the manual Heavy Cavalry enjoys an advantage in melee. I have seen my French cavalry wiped out many a time by those Prussian heavies. If you see something different send it along to Rich.

Thanks, Bill. It was really just a passing curiousity at this point since I really am not currently playing any Jena games. If another game in this title happens to materialize, I will test the engine further to make sure I am reading this correctly and contact Rich if I still have questions. I have not really thouroughly researched the issue yet. :?

I was really just curious as to whether others had seen this before. I know that a new title is often discussed in the Forum around the time of its release so I thought this might stir a memory with one of you Grognards. I have only been here less than a year and would have missed those discussions if they indeed ever occurred. No criticism intended whatsoever. It just surprised me. I always adjust my play to the ground I currently occupy (i.e. the individual game engines) anyway. It's all good from my perspective. :P

I love the games, I love this club and I respect every single officer in it (including, and especially in some ways, the French ones who I am obligated to give as much grief as I can muster).

Is this the "invincible French bug" that people compained about when the last Jena patch was released?

And historically accurate such a bug would be.

And down with the perfidous Albion. Particularly those in their pay.

In the next update the morales are restored to normal values as in Austerlitz. FYI. When will it be out? Same time as the next game in the series.

Hoping to see something out in the very near future. That is all I will say.
