I am happy to announce that the Marengo Challenge is now open.

I hope that all of you have bought the game will consider participating and we are going to offer several scenarios to make sure that players who cannot commit to the 78 turn historical battle can participate.

Format:
--This is an Army vs Army challenge. Members of the French Army will play the French side and members of the Coalition will play as the Austrians (associate members please list your preferred side). This will NOT be a mirror match. Each pair of players will play the scenario they choose only once.

--Each major victory will count as 2 points for the army of the winning player, with a minor victory counting as 1 points. Whichever army has the most points will gain bragging rights (and perhaps some sort of "prize").

--Three scenarios are included to play:
1. Scenario 098 Battle of Marengo. This is one of the most evenly balanced scenarios in any of the games (I tested it 3 times), and makes for a fine scenario to set the French Army against the Coalition. It is 78 turns long.

2. Scenario 108 Third Assault on Marengo Village. This is 28 turns and involves less forces.

3.Scenario 110 Marengo: Napoleon's Counterattack. This is also less turns and involves most of each army (still less than 30,000 men per side).

To sign up for the challenge please post in this thread or email myself (you can use the message system in the forum or contact minsterpfleck at yahoo dot com) or John Corbin (at chief_of_staff at rogers dotcom). I know some of you posted in my other thread but please reply again to answer these questions below. The French and Coalition leadership will help me match players based on skill level, scenario choice, and rate of play to the best of our ability to create matchups. Associate members can choose to participate as either side.

When you sign up, please let us know:
1. Which scenario you prefer
2. What you general rate of play is (once a week, 3-4 times a week, once a day, etc)

If you have already started one of these scenarios against an opponent, let me know and I can include it. If you regularly play against the same opponent and you both want to face off in the challenge, again, please let me know.

Good Luck!

I forgot to note: Why Marengo? Why now?

I playtested the full Battle of Marengo 3 times and found it to be one of the most well balanced, historical scenarios in the whole series of games. Don't worry, if you are matched up with me, I have not played it in 4 or 5 years, maybe longer. I am hoping the challenge will help drive interest in what is a fantastic game with a lot of hidden gems and a lot of balanced scenarios.

I also know that this is one of Napoleon's most famous victories and that a lot of French players will be happy the game came out. And, having read about it a fair amount during the course of playtesting, I know that this was vey nearly an historic Victory for Melas and the Austrians!

Why now? Well, the game just came, and I had been planning to put this together since the Spring when Bill let the playtesters know it was almost done.

How dare you threaten my honor and spot as the worst player in the Club! :P :D I should challenge you and make you accept the title of second worst player lol... :P :D

In all honesty, not 100% sure if I can commit right now, but let me get past Friday and see how it goes.... :)

Should we form militia orgs in the club for each army for "Worst Players?" :frenchlol:

Scott - into the Westphalian landwehr you go! (Rhineland landwehr just as bad)

John - there is a fine penal colony unit you could command! They were part of the Army of Berlin in 1813. Oudinot's "Guard" :frenchroll:

:frenchwink1:

At times I have both of you beat hands down. No patience .. just no patience. :frenchroll:

Thanks for the response so far. Emails are also trickling in (most members are not often on the message board) so I will leave this open for at least another week before we make the matchups.

I would be honoured to be one of the officers in the Russian Corps to accept this challenge. Due to a heavy work load, I request scenario #2 (108) and should be able to manage at least 2 turns per week.
