First result, (I think) is major French victory after 8 turns at Lodi. Stefano has conceded.

Bill and Dejan reporting in ... Turn 8 of 18 of our Lodi match :frenchvive:

Allies hanging on to the bridge for now. Dejan's forces getting across at the fords on my right and left flank. Not sure how much longer I will hold the bridge but he has paid in blood for trying to come across too early.

Mssrs.,

Sir Muddy and I are engaged in a variant of the Teung-Hausen battle from the Eckmuhl Campaign. In this variant the Austrian Reserve (grenadiers, dragoons and cuirassiers) join the battle while Friant's Division arrives for the French and all of St. Sulpice's cuirassiers.

I was able to storm the Hausner Berg before the bulk of the Austrians arrived and forced my way through the woods as far as the VP hex deep in the woods South of the Hausner Berg. Sir Muddy, however, managed to reinforce the VP height to the East of the path through the woods, counterattacked and recaptured the VP hex South of the Hausner Berg and launched a turning movement against my right flank, supported by all the Austrian cavalry, aimed at Roth. A direct assault on the Hausner Berg was turned back by the massed fire of a French grand battery.

The timely arrival of St. Sulspice's cuirassiers turned the tables on the Austrian cavalry and restored my right flank. With infantry support, 4 Austrian batteries and the bulk of the Austrian cuirassiers have been eliminated, but the Austrians retain a strong force of hussars and dragoons on that flank. Meanwhile, the Austrians have launched a powerful attack through the woods on my left flank which has shattered the 2nd and 3rd brigades of Friant's Division.

We are now entering the 18th of 20 turns and the issue remains in doubt. The current butcher's bill (before the French move) stands at:

Infantry: 8423F/9168A
Cavalry: 1070F/1462A
Artillery: 1F/29A
Leaders: 5F/4A
Total points: 1032 (750 needed for French Major Victory).

Regards,

Paco

Antonio and I haven't started. Several delays by both of us, and now he's away with work, until September.

Here to announce a victory for the Allies! In a very close game of "The Battle of Lodi" (18 turns) I have pulled out the Minor Victory for our side. Much thanks to Dejan for a good game. As I have played this one a lot in playtesting with Monsieur Palomo I feel like I had the "Recon Edge" in this one. Nonetheless I got careless late in the game and let him grab an objective well to the rear. The bridge held throughout - he would take the objective and I would take it right back! Finally his elite battalion was repulsed and the Allies prevailed.

Looking forward to Round 2 but I will tell you guys right now .. I wont be playing with NME OFF + Embedded Melee as per this game. I demolished two stacks of French cavalry and frankly that was the difference in the game. Had Dejan held onto those cavalry its a totally different game. Instead they were wiped out in one turn in the old "Blitzkrieg" method that many of us grew to dislike about the older way of playing.

So for me -- all future games .. NME ON and no EM.

Mssrs.,

I would offer a toast to the noble Sir Muddy. A final, furious charge on the Hausner Berg was stopped just short of the VP hex, sealing a French Major Victory, but it was your classic, "near run thing." :frenchshock:

The final tally was:

Infnatry: 9,433 F/ 10,756 A
Cavalry: 1,504 F/ 2,110 A
Artillery: 6 F/ 29 A
Leaders: 9 F/ 7A

VP: 1,067

Regards,

Paco

Looking at Paco's account ... brings back memories of working on Eckmuhl some 18 years ago. Teugn-Hausen was my favorite scenario to work on. Its a game designer's nightmare as it was hard to balance.

Well done, you two, and nice try, Muddy! Sounds like a grand game. Thanks for the writeup Paco.

Congratulations to Paco on his victory. Although the Marechal usually defeats me, this was still a good fight. The French have the numbers early, so they were able to capture the major objectives and push into the forests. The Austrians gathered strength though and bruised the French pretty good and started to inch closer to the big objective hex just beyond the woods. The fighting in the center was intense but the Austrians couldn't break the defensive cordon of guns and infantry that Paco put in place.

On the Austrian left, I tried to sneak my cavalry through the woods to threaten the French right flank and rear. They were met by a full French division of heavy cavalry that arrived just in time. The French cavalry really outperformed the Austrian horse and captured several batteries of horse artillery -- hence the difference in guns captured.

All in all, it was a well fought contest and I think I made Paco break a sweat somewhere along the line.

Muddy

Muddy,

I did more than sweat, my fingernails were bitten to the quick as I watched how close you came to breaking my lines. In the end, it was the grand battery on the Hausner Berg that saved my center and the charge of St. Sulspice's cuirassiers that turned the tide on my right. My infantry had performed nobly, but I pressed them too hard and were too fatigued to stop the fresh, Austrian reinforcements. This battle could have easily been an overwhelming Austrian victory.

Regards,

Paco
