I just finished building the last map for the new game. Its for the Battle of Emmedingen - 1796. The town is located just north of Freiburg, east of the Rhine River.

Moreau's army was retreating to cross at Kehl (to the northwest) when the Archduke Karl's army caught up to the French army. Karl formed up his forces in four columns. St. Cyr's force was marching south down the Elz River and the Austrians were harrying his retreat. Elsewhere along the front the forces of Dexaix, Beaupuy were battling to hold off the other Austrian "kolonnes."

Eventually the French fell back behind the Elz River, blew the bridges and ended up retreating to the south to cross the Rhine elsewhere.

Because of the heavy rains the rivers were flooded. There are tags for washed out bridges and roads.

The battle scenarios will use 15 min. turns using the 10 min. turn MP allowances and costs. Thus more time will expire with less movement. I chose this format rather than use the Weather Line MP reduction system which seems to penalize routed units a lot.

Playtesting will begin soon on the battle. I am going to assign 36 turns (that is 9 hours) to the battle. That should be plenty of turns to determine a winner. :)

The map is 216 hexes wide by 119 hexes high.

Were the elevation levels of the engine enough? Seems like a brought range had to be covered.

Yes, I used levels 3 to 26. 0 is the lowest available and 26 is the highest. Each contour level is 20 meters apart from the others.

Sometimes when a hill is definitely not going to be in play I skip some of the elevations. I did that in this case. The highest point in the game was actually higher than the game map will show but its not important: no one is going to be use that hill as an observation post. its covered in woods. (similar to Big Round Top - of no military value)

I think one time I used 30 meter contour levels. I dont like to go beyond 20 meters if I can help it. One of the map (Aldenhoven) uses 10 meter differences as its a very low map and I thought that it would look better if there were more contour levels to show the break in elevation. I do not adjust the cost to cross the contour levels as really its all relative. The unit is moving upward while it crosses the same level to eventually gain the next level. Its not like suddenly there is this huge "step" up that it has to take.

Quick artwork update: I received the Units.bmp file from Mark Adams last night. It only needed 5 corrections. Not bad for 162 new images. ;)

We are on to the 3D artwork now. Sent him the artillery images. Cavalry will follow next and then the much larger infantry set.

Not sure how long this will take. While the 3D images go quicker for Marengo I thought it would finish up sooner than it did.

I am going to figure some time in October just to be on the safe side. Might go longer. Not sure at this point.

After that - terrain updates (if any) and then the artwork is all done.

I finished up the French OB for the Emmendingen battle so on to the Austrians next. Should be laying out units on the map later on today.
