The main "unofficial" house rule that you will encounter is whether to allow "column infantry" melee or not. Sometimes people add some "night rules" to limit combat as well.

You have to remember the scale and size of regiments. When regiments are less than 50 men strong having regiments from two different brigades in the same hex which is 120 yards wide doesn't mean they are really mixed. In those sizes they could be fully deployed in line with proper alignment. It just...

It isn't obvious how much effect it is having unless you turn on the detail battle reports and look through the numbers. I like the idea though and usually try hard not to mix my regiments when the option is on. Since it is a morale modifier rather than a combat modifier (like 10% reduction in comba...

If the developer limits the scenarios to strict re-creations of the historical event, your IQ statement holds some merit, Kennon. But it seems to me that in such a game package there'd be room for all sorts of What-If variations to provide some challenging contests! I appreciate a developer's work ...

When anticipating the two Valley Campaigns of 1862 and 1864, don't forget that the battles were rarely balanced. One side usually had a fairly good numbers advantage. Jackson's genius in 1862 was that he was able to meet his opponents in such advantageous circumstances . . . Any good valley campaig...

The problem with column formation in HPS is it wears to many hats. It represents at various times route column and column of companies. It takes fire like it is a column of companies with only a small penalty but marches like it is in route formation. Part of this problem comes from the length of th...

Are you trying for lists based on the Campaign Game itself or the scenarios played within the particular Campaign Game? Why I ask the distinction is in some HPS Campaign Game series I do play the campaigns but rarely. They are usually much to long and involve to many small scenarios that are time wa...

Oh man, forget what I posted it just happened to me. My opponent killed an artillery unit that only had a single gun left and that artillery piece was not counted on my casualties. They aren't somehow delayed counted or? Pretty sure this is a known bug. I don't know if it happens every time there i...

For CW gamers we are actually in better shape than we have ever been. With three major game systems representing a pretty wide range of approaches to simulating the Civil War; HPS/JT/BG, BaB, and Scourge of War. On the Strategic level their are at least three with ACW II the most detailed. But all g...

When moving cavalry using the Cavalry skirmisher option, cavalry can "see" two hexes forward. However, it is only 100% effective through the center facing hexside. The other frontal hexsides to the left and right are apparently based on a die roll of some kind. This can lead to running int...

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=3903235 If the BaB designers can't get the basics of FOW right, how can we trust them to get anything right? :( Using that criteria almost all games are dogs. HPS because not only do reinforcements come in at exactly known times but their movement rates ar...

If two guns were destroyed by direct fire and no VP awarded, something buggy happened. Normally VP for guns are awarded at full value for enemy guns destroyed by artillery fire whether they are currently active enemy guns or abandoned enemy guns (captured but unoccupied so they take unscrewed status...

Gun handling in the game has more to do with how to award VP than reality. It was very difficult to destroy a gun. A direct hit by solid shot might dent the barrel rendering the gun permanently unusable but almost anything else could be repaired quickly after the battle. Actual permanent capture of ...

The main problem with the artillery capture option is that it favors sides. Usually the Union because they have larger ammo supplies and can implement a simple solution to the problem. Place a battery behind the captured guns and shoot them out of existence. This will always give you the victory poi...

On your encryption question, if I understand you correctly, one cannot encrypt JTS/HPS campaign access as is done with the battles. I do not think there is any method that allows encryption of Campaign games that ALLOWS for the information to carry on to the next scenario in the series. But, I reme...
