Hi, General, I advise you to endeavor to persevere. I think the outcome will be more like the Battle of Gettysburg than the historical battle, in that there will be a lot of uncertainty, which is historical, while there is virtually none in the historical scenario. And so Buford can concentrate his ...

Hi, General, I have thought about something like this but never implemented it. I think the bottom line is a battle of Gettysburg with real fog of war. What that means in practical terms is uncertainty as to the where and when troops arrive in the battle area. Maybe the battle area itself as well. I...

Hi, Dale,

Hi, Ross, Here is what the manual says: <font color="orange">The Auto DF Dialog can be used during a player turn to establish the Automatic Defensive Fire values for that side. Values may be established for infantry and artillery. There are two possible settings for infantry: Min and Max. At the Max...

It used to be a real problem because of the morale penalty assessed against the defender, a penalty for which I can find little historical justification. There were few night attacks recorded during the war, and most of those were unsuccessful, such as at Gettysburg or Wauhatchie. I think the night ...

Hi, My top five are: 1) Gettysburg-Lots of info available there. 2) Vicksburg-Because it includes the Cairo. 3) Sharpsburg-Easy to follow how it all went down. 4) Chickamauga- Another large battle. 5) Shiloh- well-preserved. Some interesting sites not mentioned: Droop Mountain, W Va- A very pretty p...

Hi, Lieutenant, You are exactly right, and this has been addressed before over the years. Back before the HPS system there was Talonsoft, also programmed by John Tiller. A couple of fellows named Frost and Norris modified the system so that only 400 infantry could stack in a hex. This necessitated b...

Hi, General,

I have been backpacking in the Northwest and communications have been spotty at best. Hope to be back in a couple of weeks and reestablish communications until my next expedition.

Hi, I don't know about melee, but fire modifiers are cumulative. If you fire at a unit in the woods(-40%) behind an embankment (-50%) two levels of elevation above you (-20%), you can't inflict a casualty. Wish I could expound further on this anomalie but face time constraints. MG Mike Mihalik 1/III...

My thoughts. Folks expect different things out of the club. For me, it has been to play the games. I accepted division command out of a sense of responsibility to the club. So far, my only real duty has been to conduct muster and report the results to my corps commander. I find it mildly annoying bu...

I have read a lots of books on the Civil War, including battle reports and tactics, and I have found a lot of different opinions. As near as I can tell, columns were seldom used, and most fighting was done in two-rank lines. Also skirmishers were liberally employed. I get the impression that most as...

Hi, General, I also would like to see the flexible formation change for phased play. I was told that the original rule was deliberately left as is in phased play because someone didn't like players being able to move at road movement rate between hexes out of LOS of the enemy and then deploy into li...
