I have recently been playing a Peninsula campaign, an Atlanta Campaign and a Gettysburg game. I noticed a month or two ago that the Rebel guns in Atlanta were inflicting some fearful damage on my infantry which really made my eyebrows raise. I had some discussions with my opponent about that and we ...

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more clear in my post. I would like to play the actual campaign game rather than any of the big 400 turn scenarios. That would mean probably starting at Oak Grove or Old Tavern (depending upon campaign choices) and moving forward from there with scenarios lar...

Crossroads of Freedom is a fantastic book. I've read it twice, in fact. Unlike some military history books that might focus very closely on the battle itself, McPherson places the battle of Antietam in the context of the entire Civil War. As such, he concludes that for a variety of reasons the Antie...

HPS Ozark Pea Ridge short campaign (Pea Ridge only) or Pea Ridge full campaign

I suppose Petersburg would be a difficult design primarily because two types of engagements that might be fought. On the one hand, at engagements like Jerusalem Plank Road and Five Forks, units of both sides came out into the open in regular formations. On the other hand, when/if Grant decides to hi...

I agree with Rich that it is too easy to melee under the current rules. Barring a lucky pre-melee defensive fire that disrupts the attacker, any unit from the highest quality right down to E morale and Max Fatigue units will happily melee a defender no matter the strength of the position. While we a...

I think fatigue for movement has some merit, particularly in larger games where some units might march for a couple of hours towards the action. As mentioned in an above post, if night fatigue is possible, day fatigue should be possible albeit at lower rates. I would also argue that a 'forced march'...

There are some very good points being raised in this thread. As for myself, the more I look at it, the more it is clear to me that by the middle of 1864 and into the Spring of 1865, the Civil War was being fought with WWI tactics rather than Napoleonic tactics. The major difference with WWI itself (...

I agree with Rich on several points: 1-Embankments at Kennesaw make it far too easy for the Union player to make risk assessments regarding where to attack. Or at least the fact that the Union player can easily see the line of embankments. In reality, attacking forces often couldn't determine the st...

Gents, The Cast Iron Division seeks a rebel team of 2-3 players for a Gettysburg MP game. The scenario we are proposing is a 2005 Rich Hamilton tournament game titled 'the climax'. It is 32 turns long, uses the Gettysburg game and both sides having roughly equal forces. If interested, send a courier...
