He likely uses the Brigade Color feature, you can activate it in the View menu.

When I turn off units, the objective turns off as well. Is this normal and can I turn off units without turning off objectives? Also, when I turn off units, the unit's 'ghosts' are still visible at their location, represented by a black outlined hex. AFAIk no, turning off units will turn objectives...

Docx stands for Office Open XML and while the name suggest that it has something to do with OpenOffice it comes from Microsoft.

I'm using LibreOffice and icons are showing up fine.

I have no clue about the actual way these rules were formed but seems obvious that higher ranks are there for people who do their share to keep the club running.
