Conversely I have heard a Navy sailor ask what the handholds on the bridge of a ship were for. Apparently he had never seen them on Navy ships. I would have thought even a modern aircraft carrier or submarine has them but I have not had the chance to confirm. So maybe he was just a Navy guy being Na...

Holy crap it seems like every game in the ACW series is / will be updated to version 4.00. Even games outside the ACW series got / will be getting updates. https://wargameds.com/pages/updates-civil-war-battles I am getting timed out on the download links though. I wonder if the save games are backwa...

I was thinking about posting something similar on melee, but then saw to my embarrassment that along with melee, much of what has been covered here on fire combat has also in one form or another been covered either in the forum or the Union War College. I didn't intend to reinvent the wheel. The mel...

I guess I'm not done with this topic yet. I read through old posts and learned that it is possible to kill more than one gun in an artillery battery from a single fire result. I had not played enough to see it happen yet. This means that artillery overkill only happens if the stack would cause losse...

Entrenchment_QR.png The attached table is an entrenchment quick reference to give a player an idea of how long it will take to dig in on their chosen defensive line. Entrenchment parameters can potentially differ even within the same game title so I provided Gettysburg and Overland as baselines. I ...

My understanding of the breastworks mechanics is that the parameter value is the percent chance of a unit or stack of units with the same facing creating a breastwork. That percent chance number is based on their being 1000 men making the attempt (however, it could be based on the maximum stacking ...

Hi Ashdoll, I concur with your tests! Thank you for finding a way to test for multiple morale checks (MC2) that did not require hundreds of tests. A last note on firing individually to try and increase your odds of causing a morale check: if a unit would only take about 15 or fewer total casualties ...

I solved another question. The program checks immediately after a loss whether a unit must make a morale check and saves the result. In other words, MC1 happens after each loss and the program saves it. MC2 then happens at the beginning of the next player's turn. I found this out by shooting at a un...

Morale checks (MC2) from defensive fire (ie during the turn) have an outcome of pass(undisrupted)/fail(disrupted). It was an easy test. I set up a game with phases and fired Napoleons point blank at 'B' units with leaders. Another thing I learned: when playing in phases (manual defensive fire optio...

Ashdoll, Keep in mind that parts of the manual are incorrect as far as how the game works. For example, I only figured out that morale checks (MC2 in your parlance) from offensive fire automatically cause disruption if passed from observing the game. The manual is incorrect or incomplete on this poi...

Hi Ashdoll, I agree that ambiguity remains as to how the loss, kill and morale checks work. Based on the portion of the manual I quoted though, I understand it clearly that every fire result that results in a loss causes a gun, kill or possible morale check, regardless if it occurs during offensive ...

Up front: I hope my math is correct. I don't do probability often. I noticed while playing JTS that not everyone seems aware that the user manual promotes the benefits of firing a whole stack of units at a target rather than firing the units individually. To quote the latest version of the JTS manua...

I think I answered my own question. It seems that the manual does not tell the whole story regarding the effects of offensive fire. For offensive fire: Units that fail a morale check rout. Units that pass a morale check become disrupted. That second part is not in the manual. This also explains why ...

According to the JTS user manual, infantry units that fail a morale check from offensive fire rout while those that fail a morale check from defensive fire are disrupted. In addition to casualties, those are the only consequences of fire for an infantry unit according to the manual. However I have n...

I had this same problem. I fixed it by overwriting the sounds.dat file in the Data subfolder with the one from Gettysburg. If you don't have Gettysburg or another game that works, here is the contents of the sounds.dat file from Gettysburg. Use Notepad or another editor like Notepad++ to open the fi...
