Rodes surveyed the line...it was good. But where was Johnson?? He must arrive before the dawn to "surprise" the XIICORPS as they prepared to attack. What a surprise it would be when they saw those long grey lines opposing them,...... > Cela > > 2AM > Meades HQ: They could hear the firing. Now on the... |

Chaos...the watch-word for sure. Commanders hurried to form units into lines, lines into major formations under the cover of night. Here and there sporadic firing, as regiments bumped into the enemy, trying to shift also under cover of darkness. the dawn would bring many surprises.... > > Midnight, ... |

Surprising fighting near the sunken road, as the Union continues to push forward in the dark, gaining a few precious yards. But the cost now is prohibitive, as the artillery are now firmly established for the rebels. Tomorrow's first light will produce some very hard fighting, and will last the whol... |

The night was upon us, so a halt was called across the valley, as reinforcements continued to stream towards the front. The morning would find two great armies staring at each other, wondering who would fire the first shot.... - > Cela > 9PM > Capt taft of the 107th was incredulous. It was dark > as... |

Sporadic firing, even with the will to advance the men
just groped a few feet at a time. No moon. Pitch
blackness, fear is the mindkiller.....

The night brings respite. All over the field men are finally resting, just a few sporadic volleys here and there. Except for the rebel right flank, where several thousand fresh troops, already in contact with the enemy, continue to push forward, yard by yard, killing many blue-coated soldiers who se... |

The ebb and flow of battle was like unto a great pinwheel, spinning around to the left now, as the Union took back parts of Culps Hill, only to lose a few more feet of Cemetery Hill as darkness closed.... mercifully. --- tony best <tbandjb3@zoominternet.net> wrote: > Cela > 720PM > > the three New y... |

As night fell, a hush fell over the newly arrived IIICORPS, as they settled in for the night. Then from the gathering gloom, the sound of a fierce rebel yell, and Johnsons' entire division were upon them like ghosts. The night would not protect them now, their only salvation would be in prayer..... ... |

As dusk begins to fall, the armies are hopelessly entwined. On the rebel left, the Union [XIICORPS] moves steadily thru the woods near Culps Hill. On the Union left, new fresh troops oppose the picketts in their front. But in the center, all along the line, fierce fighting still reverberates across ... |

The fight at Culps Hill was swinging back to Union favor. Ramsuer was still holding in the woods as reinforcements started up the north side. Andersons boys were now pushing the blue troopers back back from the sunken road area, as Johnson moved closer on theit flank. If those brave boys in blue was... |
