"On emerging from the woods, we encountered a charge of cavalry. When my section was made aware of the enemy’s approach, the cavalry was not fifteen yards distant. The command "Gallop” was then given, and the rout was made in the greatest confusion. Previous to our encounter, several regim...

That's an odd one. I suspect it was done due the game engine having no provision for a leader above the level of Army Commander. The game ranks Grant as an Army Commander but with no army under his command and, as Blake says, "Grant is a supernumerary". Additionally, the game fixes Grant i...

The shark was easy to find at Murfreesboro. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/7b5c37_96ecd84d60fd45089d660ec99730e150~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_232,h_229,al_c,q_80,enc_auto/Shark.jpg I have heard tale of the witches but haven't found them. My first place to look was in Salem which is at the corner of the ...

I don't think it helps solve the mystery BUT ... https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/Bobdobbs.png It's "the figurehead of a parody religion - J. R. "Bob" Dobbs ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._R._%22Bob%22_Dobbs ) from the The Church of the SubGenius ( https://www.subgeni...

Plum Run has historically been notorious for flooding. Whenever a big rain comes, even today, it can get bad. At the moment there's a huge issue because the park service allowed beavers to construct dams there and multiply so there is a big lake in that area now. But from a historical context, I th...

I tend to think the marsh should be there. The creek on the maps is known as Plum Run. The three hexes of marsh north of the ones near Devil's Den should probably not be there. I found this reference ( https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/what-happened-at-the-devils-den-at-the-battle-of-gettysburg/ ) w...

Thanks for the insight Paul. I agree with you on the War in the East to ACW. I think it would be great. Im going to fire up GG and check it out for myself, maybe try some CWII as well. Why not? I own them right? I will let you know what my opinion is as well, see if either of them are worth playing...

I shied away from GG's War Between the States as I felt it was less of a wargame than Strategic Command-ACW and more of a 'strategic' game. I'd love GG to develop an ACW game similar to the WWII War in the East which I think is a great game. I usually play WitE about once a year and am currently pla...

I think I have now resolved the matter. Long story short, I now believe that the most likely route that Jones took was the one described by Blake, along the east-west trail that crosses Little Rocky Run about 1400 yards from Blackburn's Ford NOT the crossing closer to Centreville using the Braddock ...

Nothing definitive yet and I have to move off and do some other (far less interesting) things. Here's what I've found so far. [Don't forget I believe in the scenario the positions of Davies and Blenker should be swapped.] Miles Report ( https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924077730186&s...

Ha, that could be so. That map shows a very different situation to that portrayed in the Gottfried map. Where's it from?

I'll look into it some more. We'll get a definitive answer somehow.

The centre of Centreville is only just off Gottfried's map to the north. The point where you see an arrow emanating from 31 NY (pointing to a circled 4) is Hex {127,31} in the Bull Run scenario. Should the CSA enter that hex then Miles Division will be released from their 'Fixed' status. . You are ...

Enjoy the book. The bonus section on Ball's Bluff is very interesting (not recommended for the squeamish - a fearful slaughter of the Union ). The centre of Centreville is only just off Gottfried's map to the north. The point where you see an arrow emanating from 31 NY (pointing to a circled 4) is H...

FYI - A much more interesting conversation might be re-evaluating why Miles's Division is perpetually FIXED in the historical battle. But that's a can of worms best left closed I think. You know I can't resist looking into things, just to see if it is a can of worms or something else. Researching M...

I know that Ewell's brigade spent the battle counter-marching and was not truly engaged in the Battle of First Bull Run but what of Holmes' Brigade? From what I gather, Holmes was part of Ewell's command. Did this mean that he and his men also did not take part in the battle? Holmes's small brigade...
