Gents, please post/vote here your views on the name for the new CSA Western Army. My personal preference is for the Army of the West because it had damn nice flag and being a Crimson Tide fan the name Tennessee sticks in my craw

I propose Army of Tennessee...due to the fact it was the principal Confederate army west of Appalachians. At the peak strenght it was divided into four corps; three infantry and one cavalry (Forrest's). It fought in several campaings spanning a period of two and a half years.

I agree with the Army of Tennessee for the above stated historical reasons and it doesn't hurt that I am from Tennessee originally.

I strongly urge that the western army name include no state name. Many of us won't wear orange or sing "Rockytop".
The passions run deep. My vote is against any name which sounds like Tennessee!

<SALUTE>

Gentlemen

I like all of your suggestions ... but if we are going to stay away from State names
then either CSA Western Army or CSA Great Smoky Mountain Army
as the Smokies encompass much of the Southern States

A (hopefully) complete list of all the CSA Armies is below. Excluding state names limits our choices. While "Army of Tennessee" has a good historical case for selection, my vote is for "Army of the West", which has an equally valid historical case. I shall support whatever the final choice might be!

For information about each CSA Army, search "CSA ARMIES". Each Army is a searcheable.

Army of the Shenandoah
Army of the Peninsula
Army of the Northwest
Army of the Potomac
Army of Northern Virginia
Army of the Kanawha
Army of Eastern Kentucky
Army of New Mexico
Army of Louisiana
Army of Pensacola
Army of Mobile
Central Army of Kentucky
Army of East Tennessee-Army of Kentucky
Army of the Mississippi
Army of Tennessee
Army of Middle Tennessee
Missouri State Guard
Army of the West
Army of West Tennessee-Army of Mississippi
Southern Army - Trans-Mississippi Army
Army of Missouri
Army of Mississippi

Good list Harry!

I actually think, so there is no confusion with our foe, that we shouldn't use anything that is similar to them.

Army of the Shenandoah
Army of the Potomac
Army of Tennessee

All included in that proposal. But it is up to the masses. :)

My first preference based on history would be Army of Tennessee, but, as there is a Yank army of same name I think that would cause confusion. Therefore my practical choice and seconding of Cam's suggestion is Army of the West.

I'm much in agreement with General Stiles, my preference historically in the AoT, but in practice the Army of the West stands as the best choice.

I am in agreement with General Stiles and General Weir. Having AOT on the Reb side and AOtT on the Union could be confusing. The Army of the West is represented in a couple of the HPS titles anyways so it is a good choice.

My preference is Army of Tennessee. The Union army was Army of the Tennessee. Ours was named after the state, theirs after the river. The principal Confederate army in the western theater for most of the war was Army of Tennessee, just as the principal Confederate army in the eastern theater for most of the war was Army of Northern Virginia. Just makes sense.

Gentlemen,

I think the Army of Tennessee is the proper choice. It was the principle army of the south in the western theater. It has too long been ignored in our club.

The other major choice seems to be the Army of the West which only played a major role in the Corinth and Ozark campaigns in 1862 and after that largely disappeared.

On the other hand the Army of Tennessee and it's predecessor Army of the Mississippi were the major participants in the Battle of Shiloh, invasion of Kentucky,Battle of Perryville, Battle of Murfreesboro, Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Chattanooga, Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Battle of Atlanta and numerous other significant engagements. The Army of Tennessee was still standing at the end at Carterville even after the surrender of Lee and the ANV.

The Army of Tennessee was also the army of Forest, Claiborne, Hardee, A.P. Stewart, Cheatham, Wheeler, Breckenridge and many other heroes of the south.

The Army of Tennessee was also the principle army for the western southern soldier with large contingents from Alabama, Mississippi , Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arkansas Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.

I think it would be a real shame if we missed this opportunity to honor this fine army.

Yours sincerely,

The Army of the West was a military force within the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War that was part of the Trans-Mississippi Department and was composed primarily of members of the old Missouri State Guard. It saw action in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Battle of Corinth and Battle of Iuka and consisted of about 20,000 men.

The troops which formed Price's command in Arkansas and Missouri from 1863 to 1865 continued to be popularly called the Army of the West. Price's troops were formally reconstituted as the Army of Missouri when they began Price's Raid in an 1864 attempt to recapture Missouri.
