Gentlemen <salute>

It is my pleasure to announce the assignment of Field Lieutenant Mark Rogers to command of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, I Corps!

Lieutenant Rogers recently graduated from VMI where he displayed a very good grasp of tactics and strategy while achieving a minor victory in his training maneuvers. He is currently involved in battle as part of the Lieutenant's Cup, certainly to represent our worthy cause with skill and honor.

Mark, welcome to the Army of the Mississippi! The first round is on Nicodemus.

General Hulinsky,

My picture over there is of Jo Shelby. A fine Missourian and one of the better cavalry commanders of the war. He led his "Iron Brigade" of Missouri Volunteers. The tune Shelby's Mule is about his great Missouri Raid in 1863.

Most Yankees just start running when they get a look at him.

Most respectfully,

Fld Lt Rogers,
Mark,

I'd never heard this tune before so I had to go looking for it. Apparently, the tune goes by a couple different titles... "Senaca Squaredance" & also "Waiting for the Federals". Maybe I'm not the only one whose never heard of it... so here's a couple links and the lyrics. It's a really nice tune.

Joe Shelby's Mule

The Union folks away up north were one time much afraid,
'Bout something coming from the South, they said it was a raid.
Now I will tell you what it was, if you will just keep cool—
It had long ears, and a long slick tail, and called Joe Shelby's Mule.

Shout Boys, make a noise, the Yankees are afraid
That something's up and hell's to pay when Shelby's on a raid.

Once this mule went on a spree, up close to Lexington,
And every time he gave a snort he made the Blue Coats run.
Coming back through “Old Saline” he got into a trap,
He seared Old Brown, kicked up his heels, and came back safe to Pap.

Shout Boys, make a noise, the Yankees are afraid
That something's up and hell's to pay when Shelby's on a raid.

Once I went to see Old Abe and found him in a rage,
Because this mule had started north, and just then crossed “sage.
Indeed, his anger knew no bounds, says I, “Sir, pray keep cool.”
“I can't,” said he, “I've lost so much by Shelby's long tailed Mule.”

Shout Boys, make a noise, the Yankees are afraid
That something's up and hell's to pay when Shelby's on a raid

"Old Rosy" got a long dispatch, which came from way down East.
Saying, "Take some thirty thousand men and try to catch that beast.
To obey orders he was bound, but said Abe was a fool,
And hadn't a halter strong enough to hold Joe Shelby's Mule.

Shout Boys, make a noise, the Yankees are afraid
That something's up and hell's to pay when Shelby's on a raid

Some say our State did not secede, but let me tell you now
That if she did or if she didn't we'll have her anyhow
Let us alone, we"ll do the same, that is the southern rule
If that won't do we"ll pack the state down south on Shelby's Mule.

Shout Boys, make a noise, the Yankees are afraid
That something's up and hell's to pay when Shelby's on a raid

General Hulinsky,

Yes sir, that is the tune. You can usually hear it played by Civil War reenactors in camp around these parts. There is a version of it in the HPS Ozark game if anyone wants to hear it there as well.

Barman, good day to you Sir!

I'm looking for Lt. Rogers of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, I Corps. I am late of the Newtonia battlefield and he and I are going to draw on that fine barrel of whiskey that you have there before we head back into the field. Just tell him there is a bedraggled but lively remnant of the "Hall'd Arse Charge" here to see him and that I have a couple of empty iron skillets perfect for Corn Pone, that I'd like to return to him.

I'll be over here in the corner and would be obliged if you would be good enough to direct him in my direction if the occasion presents itself.

Thank you sir.

Lieutenant Sickbert <saluate>

Suh, welcome to our establishment! We don't get many Yankee guests here, however you look like a man on a mission. I'm sure Lieutenant Rogers will be around soon, so you just sit back and enjoy a sip or two.

Barkeep, fetch a drink for our guest from the executive stock. I don't believe General McOmish has managed to find all of it yet

Highest regards,

Lt Sickbert <salute>

It's good to see you sir. I'll never forget the sight of the Hall'd Arse Charge. Those Union boys on horseback at a trot, pennants flying, ranks dressed perfectly as they came at us. It was a shame to open up on them and see them disappear in that sheet of flame. I'll be glad to have a drink or three with you and I'm sure some of the good 'ole boys here will bend an elbow with us as well.

I do hope that your boys enjoyed all that cornbread. I'll take those skillets there and make sure that they are properly returned to the good folks of Newtonia. Have you had a chance to write General McClellan about the need for a bean caisson during field operations?

General Hebert was kind enough to make the good stuff available to a couple of Lieutenants like us. I suggest we get to drinking it before General McOmish arrives.

Most respectfully,
