If you have commanded in a MP game you likely know all sorts of chaos can emerge when 4 players wondering whose move it is, what file to use, have to redo a move because they used an old file that another team had already move on, etc. Following is something I worked up to deal with this. It may look complicated, but it is not and believe me it makes things go smoothly in a MP game.

__Move Protocol for Multiplayer (MP)Games

The following is a procedure which can be used to game turns and who has moved in a MP game to avoid all manner of confusion which can arise in the absence of such a procedure.

The following procedure is recommended where the players have agreed that Optional Melee Resolution is turned ON.

The Team Captain (TC), Ed receives the CSA Turn (let’s say it is Turn 1 in a UA 5th Corps vs. an ANV team playing the Surprise at Dawn Scenario from the Gettysburg Game and that the UA team is comprised of 3 guys, Bill, Bob and Steve.

The TC does the following.

He reviews the CSA turn and determines whether any changes to his initial orders are necessary and whether a specific player turn move order is necessary for tactical or traffic control reasons is necessary.

In this example, Ed decides no order changes are necessary and there is move order needed yet. Here’s what happens.

1) The TC does a “save as” for the CSA turn and renames it as follows:

!!!SaD_ANVv5thCorps_USA_1

2) He sends this file to his teammates and advises no move order is needed and that whoever can move immediately should do so.

3). Bill, who is always up early with nothing else to do, is ready to move immediately and does.

a) He sends out an email to the entire team with the following text in the subject line of the message: SaD UA 1 BILL IS MOVING. This is important to prevent other members of his team from starting to make their move at the same time.

b) Bill makes his move and fires his units. He does NOT conduct melees (to do so he would have to advance the turn to the Melee Phase which would prevent his teammates from moving their units) when they receive his move file. He does a “save as” and names his file thusly: !!!SaD_ANVv5thCorps_USA_1_Bill

c) He sends a message to all his teammates with the following in the subject line: SaD UA 1 BILL HAS MOVED and attaches his saved move file to the message. In this message he advises what melees (if he has any) he wants the TC to conduct after all players have moved. Bill describes in his email the hexes he wants to melee (target hexes) from which hexes his attackers will assault.

4) The next team member who is ready to move repeats the procedure described in 3) above. Let’s say Steve is ready to go. He sends an email to the team which states in the subject line: SaD UA 1 STEVE IS MOVING. He finishes his movement and fire combat and ADDS HIS INITIALS TO THE FILE saves it thusly: !!!SaD_ANVv5thCorps_USA_1_Bill_Steve and then sends his teammates an email which states in the subject line: SaD UA 1 STEVE HAS MOVED and attaches his move file to the email, noting as above which melees he wants the TC to conduct.

5) Repeat step 4 until all team members have moved.

6) The TC then completes all the melees requested by his team and saves the turn file thusly: !!!SaD_ANVv5thCorps_USA_FINAL. BEFORE HE ENDS THE TURN, THE TC SENDS THIS MOVE FILE TO ALL THE TEAM MEMBERS SO THEY CAN SEE THE RESULTS OF THE MELEES THEY REQUESTED (A good TC will report the actual results of this attacks as well – e.g., casualties inflicted/suffered). After the TC does this, he ends the turn and sends it to the CSA TC.

Trust me guys, it works.
