Unclear why Grant is listed as 1st replacement for George Thomas as commander of the Army of the Cumberland in the OOB - I understand that it is a work around because there is no level of command past Corps other than Army --however, the fact remains that Grant was in overall command - he would not be 2nd banana to George Thomas - not after Vicksburg. |
