Hello all, I was a member of the club about 20 years ago, but had to resign my commission due to a change of careers. I am in the process of hopefully returning to the club in the near future, but I have a couple of questions.
I used the old Talonsoft games when I played before, but I notice they were designed for a Windows 7 computer. Can these still be used on a Windows 11 setup?
Also, I am going to pick up a few new games from the Wargames Design Studio, and I was wondering which are the most popular titles amongst club members. I was planning to pick up the Campaign Gettysburg and Campaign Antietam titles, but was wondering what would be a good third title to help be get started again.
Thanks in advance for any direction you can provide.
Bill Croft

It is most unlikely that the old Talonsoft games will work on Windows 11 (and several versions before that one) - mine certainly do not. You should be able to purchase the entire Battleground series for about US$30 at Matrix Games (those versions should work on Windows 11 - ask Matrix before you buy to be sure). Other companies may also sell versions compatible with modern computer systems.

My personal preference would be for Antietam over Gettysburg. I would also recommend Shenandoah as it has a good number of well-balanced scenarios. But it really depends upon what you desire to play. You can get a good idea about what each title contains from here (https://www.acwgc.net/gameguides).

Hello Bill, welcome back Sir.

Chickamauga is a highly recommended game and should, I suggest, be amongst your proposed purchases.

Agree with Antietam over Gettysburg and Chickamauga over Shenandoah. But it does depend on what battles you enjoy playing.

The old Talonsoft games don't work with Windows 11 as far as I know. There might be a workaround but with so many other titles it's easier to just retire those. The Matrix version of the TS games is compatible with all Window versions.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I’ll start with Antietam, Gettysburg and Chickamauga and add Shenandoah at a later date.

Bill,

I forgot to mention that getting the Gettysburg title will provide you access to all the BGG 2024 scenarios created by Blake, either within the 2024 Challenge or as standalone PBEM games also, what's not to like.

Welcome back Bill. I actually remember your name from all those years ago. Many of the current players, me included, returned after being away for years. Retirement does that. Good luck to you.
