New recruit here. I reside out in California but please don't hold that against me. I've been playing wargames since the 70's starting with the AH and SPI games. After retiring I have much more time to devote to this hobby. While I am new to the WDS titles I look forward to coming up to speed and enjoying some head to head to play. I also very much enjoy the AEGOD title Civil War II as far as ACW games go. While I have a limited amount of experience with PBeM games I used to belong to AHIKS back in the 80's and played many a PBM game. Good times turning a move around every 10 days if you were lucky.

As for other gaming interests I enjoy Gary Grigsby WiTE (1 and 2), Strategic Command series and the Civilization franchise. I am also interested in finding board game partners and using Vassal to play some games with actual counters; like VG Civil War, AH Bull Run as well as AH 3rd Reich.

Anyways excited to join this community and push some virtual counters around with the WDS titles I've recently purchased.

Mr Loudscott,

Welcome to the ACWGC and the finest band of brothers, either side of the Mississippi.

That was an excellent intro you posted, full of interesting information. I too started out with AH & SPI way back in the day and had a substantial collection also, including the entire GDW Europa Series, all long disposed of now, regretfully, but I still retained a small number of them, including amongst them.....VG Civil War, a fine classic I suggest. I too have Vassal altho little use for it these days. Perhaps we shall, at some stage in the future, meet across a Vassal Civil War map.

Good to have you aboard sir, Enjoy.

Welcome,

I too am from California. Santa Monica in fact but have been in Tennessee since 89. I wish I still had my old SPI and AH board games. You used to be able to walk into a hobby shop and see them hanging on the wall.

Thank you all. Guys, I too regrettably lost (gave up) my original teenage years collection of games in the 70's. But I started rebuilding my collection (small as it is) in the 80's and I still have that library. But I found that on Noble Knight Games you can still purchase pre-owned games. I have a copy of AH 3rd Reich 4th Edition on the way that supposedly has unpunched counters. I can put that next to my tattered 3rd edition copy which is 45 years old

I'm on the Vassel discord and I hit up some of the other gamer websites but it seems that with the advent of computer wargaming it's pretty hard to find anyone willing to play an actual board game anymore and certainly no new players showing up. It would seem that we are a dying breed.

Cadet Loudscott,

I've noticed you have been active asking some really good questions over at the WDS forum. You might want to consider asking a few questions here. The folks here have decades of experience in these games and will no doubt offer some equally great answers.

Please do not misunderstand, I would still like to see those questions on the WDS forum, but here is a great place to place them too. Trust me, the folks here know this stuff. :D

Thanks Rich. Appreciate any pointers and guidance. I was considering asking my noob questions here but I noticed there really weren't any other "noob question" threads. Didn't want to be the new guy who can't stay on topic :D But fair enough, I'll do so moving forward.

Newer recruits often ask their trainer such questions during their training game. Later on, when the initial training has been completed such questions are often made directly to others in their own division or army.

I can't give you much advice (as you joined the wrong side) although I know that there are some capable and knowledgeable players on your side. One piece of advice I can provide is that a lot of information can be found in the User Manual and even more is available in the Academy.
There may also be some good stuff in the Union War Library but I'm unsure as I don't know the password. If you can provide me with the password I can then verify whether or not the information there is useful, LOL.

If you have a question, I would simply post it and not worry about which side you on. Frankly, I think many would benefit, regardless of your side or rank. And players will try to answer and not concern themselves with North or South. IMHO.

Agreed, post on the Mason-Dixon Forum where you will get responses from knowledgeable people on a huge range of subject matter relating to the Civil War. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Information, historical and game related, is freely shared here without reference to uniform color or creed, it's all about fun and friendship at the ACWGC amongst like minded people.
