Guys,

Normally I pick random pictures for each regiment. Currently I'm working on another title and I thought I would try to make each brigade use the same picture, thinking that this would help keep up with brigade integrity and uniformity.

What do you think?

I like the idea, myself. Especially if you match historic uniforms, flags, hats, etc. that were unique to certain regiments. It would be a nice touch. So the Iron Brigade all has their black hats, Irish brigades of either side could have their green, etc.

Now the important question is: What is the new title you are working on? [:D]

Hi, Rich,

I think units like the Iron Brigade with their black hats and the Irish Brigade with the green flags are exceptions, and should have pictures depicting their distinctive features, because their opponents could spot them for who they were from a distance. Zouave units are another example, but you probably would have difficulty telling one zouave unit from another. I suspect most units had no such distinctive features, most particularly late-war Confederate units who couldn't be too particular about what they wore. So I think your random picture idea is the way to go for the vast majority of units, but in instances where historically something stood out, show that picture. Otherwise you would be compromising fog of war to a degree. I think most games have followed that formula, but some show Louisiana units in a distinctive uniform when I suspect they had adopted more nondescript uniforms by that time.

Rich, take a look at this site.

12x15 Coloured Bitmap.
This is some work a few of us have got together on.
If there is anyway I can help just ask.

The more history and consistency the better IMHO...

A long long time ago when I did the Shiloh mod for HPS Corinth, I used the same picture for each *state*. Afterall, there was some consistency within the state contingents, for instance the felt hat was more popular in the Northwest while east coast regiments preferred the forage cap, etc.

Very nice, but HPS won't let me use these graphis. My question was more simplistic. I have to use the pictures at my disposal. I wanted to know if I should use the same picture for each regiment within a brigade, or just pick random pictures. I can only pick from the unit pictures on the unit.bmp file.

My vote would be for same picture for the whole brigade. The bitmap
gives enough variety to even meet some of the other suggestions of
using pictures that resemble historical preferences of the brigades.

The problem is, that not only will we recognize the better brigades,
like Black Hats, at distance, by playing enough, we'll also recognize
the more routine brigades.

Captain Walker,

I agree with General Cuneo and others. For the larger scenarios, the same photo will undoubtedly have to be used for more than one brigade so I doubt if there will be many problems with recognizing the average brigade from a distance.

For those of us who are totally unfamiliar with the life cycle of game design (and don't know if unit photos is early or late in the process), can you drop a hint about when the game will be ready for publication? Is it apt to be available in time for Tiller Con II?

Your humble servant,

What about the black and white icons they are hps pics there is just more of them. If you use all the icons we can put our own graphics in.
A group of us are trying to standardise the units with the oob's.
The issue about knowing which units you were up against, you would be able to know which unit you were facing from a distance but that would work both ways.
I thought that if one was working with the b/w icons fron the other web site that one could start with 0 for the first regiment in the oob and then 1 for the next and so on till all the inf units were used then go back and start over. This may mean a bit of extre work for the guys hps but who knows anything can happen when people talk.
What do you think?
