1. Generally, do you play in 2D or 3D?
2D

2. What's the longest battle you've fought, in turns?
130+-Beaver Dam to Malvern Hill

3. Do you play in single phase, or multi-phases? Answer as a percentage for each. 90% multiphase

4. How many ACW games do you usually have going at once?
Varies-prefer 2-3, right now 4-5.

5. Do you play multi-player regularly?
No.

6. Preference in Optional Rules included? Excluded?
I like all the optional rules except isolation. After much research
I don't think it ought to apply to this level of combat in its
current configuration.

7. What year did you join this club?
1999

8. How many of the 10 HPS Civil War disks do you have?
10

9. Favorite HPS Civil War disk? Least favorite?
Corinth is probably my favorite because of its flexibility. Hard to
pick one I have not gotten much pleasure from.

10. What's the ONE thing you'd have John Tiller change/fix. ONE.
Real crews for the artillery.

1. Generally, do you play in 2D or 3D?
2D always, old board gamer here.

2. What's the longest battle you've fought, in turns?
Looks like 74 turns, played a 66 turn manuever... lol

3. Do you play in single phase, or multi-phases? Answer as a percentage for each.
Single phase now, used to play multi but grew to (really dislike) it.

4. How many ACW games do you usually have going at once?
11 or 12. 4 MP games and 1 ongoing manuver. A couple of "dead games" where I'm waiting for my opponent to show up again.

5. Do you play multi-player regularly?
I do now.

6. Preference in Optional Rules included? Excluded?
I usually play with all but the top left 3.

7. What year did you join this club?
2007

8. How many of the 10 HPS Civil War disks do you have?
I have 6 right now, still to get Vicksburg, Shiloh... thinking about Franklin and Ozark. Checking opinions.

9. Favorite HPS Civil War disk? Least favorite?
Getty, Atlanta, Chick, Corinth, Peninsula, Antietam... oh, that's all of them... No least fav...

10. What's the ONE thing you'd have John Tiller change/fix. ONE.
Artillery rules - captures, crews, ammo.

1. Generally, do you play in 2D or 3D?
2D, although I might occasionally switch to 3D for part of a turn just for a change.

2. What's the longest battle you've fought, in turns?
100+

3. Do you play in single phase, or multi-phases? Answer as a percentage for each.
Perhaps 95% Single phase. I rarely play in multiphase mode, except at the request of an opponent.

4. How many ACW games do you usually have going at once?
2 or 3, play about the same number of EAW and Nappy games too.

5. Do you play multi-player regularly?
Sometimes.

6. Preference in Optional Rules included? Excluded?
Most, except Manual Defensive Fire, Higher Fatigue Recovery. But I'm willing to try different optional combinations depending on my opponents' preferences. It's good to have a choice and not always play with the same options, since this adds variety to the game.

7. What year did you join this club?
2000? Maybe earlier?

8. How many of the 10 HPS Civil War disks do you have?
Five

9. Favorite HPS Civil War disk? Least favorite?
They're all good. Maybe I like Gettysburg least because it seems tougher for the Rebs to win?

10. What's the ONE thing you'd have John Tiller change/fix. ONE.
I'm not sure. Perhaps stragglers - due to movement (especially night movement) as well as combat. Casualties in the game tend to be much higher than historical, so if say 50% of all losses were actually stragglers and could gradually return to the unit if it rested away from the combat zone (ie. remained stationary at least 5 hexes from known enemy units and wasn't shot at), this would reduce overall losses and would also encourage players to pull worn out units back out of the firing line. The fact that 50% of losses were only stragglers rather than permanent losses would also mean that fire factors could be increased and might encourage players to rely more on firepower than melee.

enerally, do you play in 2D or 3D?
3D, but I will mix it up sometimes
2. What's the longest battle you've fought, in turns?
I am on tturn 180 of a 200+ HPS GEttysburg campaign final battle

3. Do you play in single phase, or multi-phases? Answer as a percentage for each. 90/10 but I would play more mulit phase games.

4. How many ACW games do you usually have going at once?
3-4 but I am cutting back to 2

5. Do you play multi-player regularly?
I have been playing one for a couple of years

6. Preference in Optional Rules included? Excluded?
Same as Rich Hamilton except I dislike points for leader losses and have not used higher disrupted movement but probably would

7. What year did you join this club?
2001, I think
8. How many of the 10 HPS Civil War disks do you have?
all
9. Favorite HPS Civil War disk? Least favorite?
I think my favorite is Corinth. I also really like Peninsulah, Shiloh, Gettysbutg, Antietem, Ozarks. I dislike Vicksburg. Not much fun as the Rebs. I am just getting into Atlanta and Chickamagua.
10. What's the ONE thing you'd have John Tiller change/fix. ONE.
I would like to see infantry skirmishers drastically reduce the losses of a defending unit. By the end of the war, various forms of skirmish open order were very common and are poorly represented here.

There were nineteen responses to my questions.

In question #1, 14 said they play in 2D, 5 in 3D

Re question #2, re most turns ever played, the answers ranged from 86 up to 213, with an average of almost 133.

Question #3, re style of play, saw 12 playing single-turn, 6 playing multi-phase, with one claiming both equally.

Question #4, about how many games usually being played, saw answers from 2 to 11, with most falling in the 3 to 5 range.

Question #5, about multi-player playing, 7 players said they either played not at all, 7 said regularly, with the rest in between.

Question #6, re optional rules disliked, saw a wide range of preferences, with several each disliking the optional tables, higher fatigue recovery, rout limiting, isolation, and the quality options.

Question #7, re when players joined the club, saw practically every year represented, from 1997 through 2007.

Question #8, re how many HPS titles owned, saw 10 of the 19 respondants having them all, five persons having 4, three having 8.

Question #9, about most and least favorite disks, saw Gettysburg as the leading fav title, with multiple votes for Shiloh, Chickamauga and Corninth also . . . but most didn't have a least favorite, as Franklin was the only title scoring more than a single vote there.

Question #10 solicited areas for improvement from Mr Tiller . . . easily the most often mentioned thing was handling of artillery: capture rules, mobility, crew kills, ammo, and the like. The only other oft mentioned area was for improving the multi-player functionality.

If many more take the survey, I'll update the above. Thanks to all who took the time to respond.

Sincerely,
Brig Gen Dwight McBride

1. 3D

2. 100+ turns. Historical 3-day Gettysburg.

3. Single phase if possible, multi-phase only if my opponent insists. Say: 80/20%

4. 3 or 4 normally.

5. No, only once so far.

6. Usually play with all options on. Recently started turning 'rout-limiting' off. Sometimes turn off the quality fire & melee modifiers.

7. Originally 2001/2002. Re-joined last year.

8. All except Vicksburg & Franklin.

9. No favourite or least favourite. All have good points and bad points. Think Corinth might be the 'best' designed campaign? Ozark is good fun. Do not like some of the massive scenario's on Gettysburg disk: Far too big and sprawling, you know it's going to be a very long 272 turns when units go 'LOW AMMO' on turn 1 and you only have 1 supply wagon per Division.

10. Much, MUCH better graphics. Graphically, even with the user improved packages, the games still look quite poor.
