General Walter,

But if the 'magic disk' only contains the executables, it would only work if a person already had all the corresponding game files (.bmp, .doc., .hlp, .wav, etc.) installed on his machine, right? If that's the case, I don't think we would be encouraging free distribution of the games.

No, of course not. Actually it was Rich Hamilton from HPS who invented this thing ... or at least he recommended it first to me.

No, my point is that the original game CDs have no copy protection, so an unreasonable person can just copy them illegally. That being the case (HPS accepting that their games can be copied illegally), I wonder why they bother to have the game request the CD in the drive (original, copy, or "magic"), which just wears out the drive, annoys the user, and does nothing to prevent illegal distribution ... Do the games be fully installed on the hard drive or the "recommended installation" is enough ?

"Fully" I say. You see, all files that the game needs have to be on the HD, as nothing but the main .exe is on the CD.

I admit I never tried a custom install with the CD, but it wouldn't make sense if it worked any other way. Except: you could not play the background music and then you wouldn't need these files on the HD.

Ok. So as I installed the "recommended one", do you think it's possible to complete it to "fully" or do I uninstall the re-install in fully ? Just to know the difficulties (re-install last patches for all the games, 32 bits for BG, ...)

I would think it needs a re-install, but why don't you give it a try first with the all-in-one CD? Maybe it works ...

Gen Walter is correct. When you do a recommended install I believe the music, video and the sound files are not copied to the HDD. I know the music and video aren't, not positive about the sound files but I don't think they are installed either. Pointers are left in the registry that sends the game engine to the CD drive letter for these files. So if you did a normal install and use the all in one CD the game will probably play but you won't have music, video or sounds.

By the way Gen Walter, I believe the game engine only checks for the CD when you first start it under s full install. I've taken the disk out after the game is started and it works ok since it doesn't need to access the C for any other files.

That is true. It is just for verification.

If you use the DEFAULT install, all games from Campaign 1776 to Campaign Shiloh DO load all the music files to your hard drive. All music and all sound files are installed. Videos are NOT installed.

That is how my games have all worked.

I have found everything works except for changing between the 4 views (2d to 3d etc)thru the toolbar. Can only change view thru the 1, 2, 3, 4 hotkeys on keyboard.
