I have noticed during fire phases that the 'hit messages' on the map may say "3 men hit" or perhaps "6 men hit" and then the unit vanishes. But in some instances I have known in advance that the unit has more men than the "hit indicators" announce. Are the 'step losses' actually "10" men?

How do we account for losses of "1" man then? I have only seen this in instances where the units are very small in size.

Just curious as to what the 'real' step losses are. I never quite agreed with units having "one man" and still having full movement AND a zone of control.

HPS games use actual numbers not step losses. If a unit takes a "3 man hit" you should see the total number of men in the regiment decrease that amount. If the unit routes after combat I do think there is an attrition loss in the game that can reduce it further but I don't know this for certain since it does report it.

When you say: <i>"I have known in advance that the unit has more men than the "hit indicators" announce,"</i> are you playing with FOW? If so, the enemy will show as <i>1X men</i> but that is only a guess. The actual number could be lower or higher, so a loss of 7 could be enough to eliminate the unit.

I am referring to the number of men in one of my units when they are hit. For example I may have a unit with only "9 men" left. The enemy fire phase comes on and the map may say "4" men hit and then the unit vanishes. What happened to the other "5" men then?

I know with Fog of War on you can't tell exactly about enemy units, but these are my units. And it has happened several times now.

I thought there was a feature that gave a chance of a unit disappearing if it took casualties that reduced it below a certain level. Didn't always happen but that there was a chance that it could.

I know there is a function in the Panzer series by HPS that has any given hit having a chance of eliminating all remaining men/trucks/tanks for a unit once it gets to a certain size. No recollection of soming across that in ACW, though...

Yes, That's correct. It keeps units with only 1-2 men from running around. I had forgotten.
