My Dear Friends,

There are few words written of Kathyleen, Lady of Germanna Ford but I had the pleasure of several intimate meetings with Kathyleen.

The year was April 1863 as I was stationed with Confederate Cavalry Picketts and Bridge Builders on the Rapidan River near the Germanna Ford Crossing. The construction of the bridge across the ford was in early start. It was there that I meant Kathyleen. Kathyleen was of German Descent, 35 years of age, single, and may I add well endowed, very much much to my liking. Kathyleen's purpose in life was helping displaced Germans locating in the area. Kathyleen's purpose those few days was to make me forget about this damned war.

It was the morning of April 29th, that several Union Corps were spotted approaching the ford from the north. Being well out numbered we were forced to leave what little work was done on the bridge and orders found us at Chancellorsville.

As there was no time to say goodbye, I only knew Kathyleen for those several days, but those few nights we did spend together made me feel that we must of been life long friends from our start.

I was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville and it wasn't until August 1863 that I was able to return to Germanna Ford only some 15 miles away from where I recovered.

I never saw Kathyleen again. A few remaining locals did recall a fine lady who had gave comfort to them. The present shallow graves may have takened her. But to Kathyleen, and in all my love, I placed a swell of rocks on the southside of the ford in honor of this lady.

It would be prayer, that one day a Memorial would be built on that swell of Rocks so that Kathyleen, the Lady of Germanna Ford would live on.

sincerly,

Colonel R.E.Daley
