Of course, not only do we remember Gettysburg, but let us not forget the far more important event of that day, the surrender of Vicksburg.

Absolutely. A turning point of the war.

Regarding the 3rd of July, I cannot help but always remember two climactic battles on this day every year, Gettysburg 1863 and Königgrätz (Sadowa) 1866. Both broke the neck of a proud army, both decided the fate of a nation in a war in which North was pitted against South, and both saw one magnificent and hopeless massed charge of excellent troops in a grand old style that was brutally defeated by modern firepower.

I've always wondered what would have happened had Lee won at Gettysburg. I mean, whould Vicksburg still have surrendered, or would the victorious news caused them to hold on just a little longer? Would they have even received the news in time to decide?

Excellent comparisons. I feel no matter what had happened at Gettysburg, Vicksburg was doomed once Davis put Pemperton in charge there. It's fate was sealed when he withdrew into the town for siege.

Thank you Gary. Quite often Vicksburg is forgotten. Gettysburg was probably the most dramatic moment but Vicksburg was the more important from a strategic standpoint.

They wouldn't have known in time to do anything or change the outcome in Vicksburg. Ever after the 1st day at Gettysburg - a Confederate victory that would have had McClellan running for Pipe Creek - the news didn't reach Vicksburg. With the seige in place, I doubt they got much news and what they did get was probably old. Vicksburg would still have fallen either way.
