Post subject: List of balanced scnarios in HPS titles?

I was wondering if anyone has a nice list of battles in the HPS titles that are roughly balanced so that neither side has a distinct advantage that could be shared with the club? Or if not we could perhaps compile one? Especially smaller battles that don't involve 250,000 men on the map at one time. That is one thing I like about Vicksburg is that even the largest battles never seem to involve more than 30,000-40,000 men for either side, which makes turn time much smaller.

So who has some suggestions?

This has been a topic before, I would love to see a list developed. Even if there are some custome scenarios out there that are relatively balanced???

Gents,

I have a couple that I have found to be very interesting. The first battle is from HPS Campaign Shiloh, titled: Calfkiller Creek this is a 40 turn fights which is a meeting engagement of the forces from the 1st day of the battle of Shiloh.

On a little smaller scale is from the HPS Campaign Gettysburg, the custom designed battle by Rich Hamilton called The Climax, this is a 32 turn meeting engagement with like size forces, lots of cavalry and the I Corps of the ANV against two smaller Union Corps.

And for an even shorter and smaller scale is again from the HPS Campaign Gettysburg, the custom designed battle called Raid on Stephenson's Depot, this is an 18 turn battle with like forces.

Both of the last two scenarios can be found and downloaded from the GameSquad site http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=7

Respectfully,

General Lynn,

HPS Shiloh, Scenario 046 "FD_Rebels March on FH", 40 turns: "(What If) Union General Halleck has delayed General Grant's march toward Fort Donelson. But he finally gives his belated permission almost at the same moment as the Confederates, who having been reinforced, decide to gamble and march on to Fort Henry. They hope to surprise the unsuspecting Union garrison at Fort Henry."

Opening this and looking at both sides, it's difficult for me to imagine a more balanced scenario. Both sides are roughly equal in size, neither has a distinct terrain advantage, with plenty of room to maneuver (and, at 40 turns, plenty of TIME to maneuver). A couple of smaller objectives in the center, plus larger objectives far to the rear of both sides, require both North and South to seriously consider the effect of inadequately protecting their centers while trying to come up with some way of putting together an effective offense. The forces are small enough, there is no way to anchor on map sides. If you want your flanks protected, you had better figure out a way to protect them.

General Danner and I just completed a battle in this scenario, which ended in a Draw. Both sides probed and maneuvered, but neither could come up with anything near an overwhelmingly superior mass of force anywhere. We've swapped sides to try again. Now we both know what the other has -- and that knowledge won't make our tasks any easier.

Since it's a what-if scenario it may not be for the hard-core history buffs, but it has everything I've ever wanted in a balanced scenario.

Your humble servant,
Gen 'Dee Dubya' Mallory

John Newton and I are playing one called "Perryville with Equal Forces". It's on the Chick disk. Meeting engagement near Perryville, no vp's and the Rebs get Kirby Smiths boys added to the OOB.35 turns.

HPS Atlanta has 2 scenarios that are specifically designed to be balanced. Scenarios 133 (an infantry fight) and 134 (a cavalry fight). Equal forces, no objective hexes. Scenario 133 is 35 turns, the map is pretty big. No creeks, but some nice terrain. Scenario 134 is 20 turns long.

In HPS Gettysburg there is also the Training scenario. Each side gets a Corps and 16 turns. Many of you may have trained with it.

I have also played Things Heat Up. Pretty good scenario.

Alan,

You asked for it so now you should start a listing from all of the replies. Sounds like some good ones that I haven't heard about before. I thought for sure that Jeff was going to suggest the Historical Rocky Face Ridge, it is the kind of balanced forces he likes.

Balanced in that I have more troops, many of them Fixed, and terrible terrain in which to attack...Yet we'll find ways to persevere, I hope!
