Gentlemen of the CSA- The Army of Alabama has started up a newsletter, which can be located here: http://www.freewebs.com/aoanews/ We are running a contest to find a name for the newsletter. Please visit our front page at the link above to check out all the details. The officer whose submission is the winning entry, will get to chose from 3 books I've listed as a prize. Gen. Cuneo,I haven't any knowledge of the unit you refer, sorry. I can however, provide a little information on the fellows I referred to. <font color="blue">12th Alabama Cavalry Battalion [Partisan Rangers] The 12th Alabama Cavalry Battalion, Partisan Rangers, was organized with 4 companies before 12 September 1862 and operated in East Tennessee for some months. It was then assigned to the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment in November 1862 while the army lay at Murfreesboro. It then fought at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, and in Gen'l James Longstreet's East Tennessee Campaign. The Battalion was involved in several battles beginning with the Atlanta Campaign (May through September, 1864), including the fights at Rome where one company lost 20 casualties in defending a bridge, Atlanta (25 casualties), Campbellton (45 casualties), and Sunshine Church. It was also in the Savannah Campaign (November-December 1864), and the Carolinas Campaign (February-April 1865). It was reconstituted with the original 4 companies before 30 June 1864. Companies "E", "F", and "G" were assigned to the unit in 1864, and it was increased to a regiment and designated the 12th Alabama Cavalry in January 1865.Field officers: Col. Warren Stone Reese; Lt. Cols. William H. Hundley (Madison); Marcellus Pointer; Majors William H. Hundley (promoted); Albert Gallatin Bennett (St. Clair; resigned, 5 Jan 1863); Augustus John Ingram; and Adjutant W. W. I have to correct myself, officially, they're the 43rd Battalion of Virginia Cavalry, although Col. Mosby referred to them as a battalion of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. We know them today as Mosby's Rangers. At the time, they were known simply as Mosby's Men. They operated in two Virginia counties, Loudoun and Fauquier, and never exceeded regimental size. They rarely fielded that many at one time, however. They tied down thousands of Yankees. They formed in 1863 and were also reportedly the only Confederate combat unit that never surrendered. Hey Notso! These prize books...they wouldn't by chance be the books I sent you for use in some club contest are they? Being a Yank donating them to a Reb newsletter could be construed as giving aid, comfort, and even intelligence to the enemy [B)] though some of them were on the South [:D]...that Stonewall Jackson Bio is great! I missed entering the contest but checked out the link...personally I thought there was a conspicuous absence of the name "Picayune" in the entries. Maybe a modification of Mark's moniker for it only more like the "Girly Man Picayune." That has a rather Southern ring to it. But oh my! What would General Moose think?! [:)] Colonel Tom Ciampa
