Gentlemen:

It has given me great pleasure to hereby awarded the first ever Wade Hampton Medal to Col. John Newton, for his outstanding service as serving as the best of Staff here at Vicksburg Military Institute. Col. Newton has been a big plus in helping run different programs here at VMI. He has displayed the skill and competence required by a Staff Officer of The Vicksburg Military Institute and is a credit to this Institution, the Army and the Confederate States of America.

I want to thank you, General Tisdale, and <u></u>ALL<u></u> of the VMI staff for your help and encouragement while I was in attendance at that fine institution. Your work at preparing myself and the other cadets for a career in service is not only laudable, but y'all set a such fine example a primary tenet of leadership.
