Post subject:  Morale check question

I have a couple of questions concerning the morale check. Here is a situation, stack A has 100 men, stack B contains 4 counters of say 100 men each.Stack B is in the defensive fire phase, stack A will receive 4 volleys. Will stack A have to take 4 morale checks or just 1 at the end of the defensive fire phase?
Is turn play different to phase play? For example in a players movement phase in turn play, each time defensive fire is triggered and causes casualties does that trigger a morale check each time?
Does it matter how many losses a unit takes?Even if a unit lost just 1 man would that trigger a morale check?
many thanks

Hi,

These are questions there ought to be answers to somewhere, but aren't. Here are my observations.

1)In the single phase game, the morale check apparatus is activated with each volley, so there would be four checks. I infer this because I have observed moving units disrupt from defensive fire before completing their turn. Keep in mind that the morale check apparatus includes a formula that determines if the check is even made. This is (number of casualties)/(number of casualties+25). Therefore, if a unit suffers 5 casualties in a volley, it would have a 5/(5+25) or 1/6 chance of a morale check.

2) I really don't know if in phased play it is cumulative casualties or several checks, but results aren't applied until the DF phase is over.

3) See the formula above to see how casualties affect the probability of a morale check. Otherwise, I guess if it changes the fatigue status from low to medium or medium to high, then that would affect the unit's ability to pass the actual morale check.

If anybody has better info, please weigh in.

In Turn play (single phase) the morale check is made at the time casualties are taken but still using the same formula.

In Phased play the morale check is made either at the end of Defensive fire if you are the active player or in the Command phase that takes place at the beginning of your turn to resolve Offensive and Melee resutls. It uses the accumlated casualties and modifiers for a single check.

Supposedly it will work out about the same statistically for say 4 checks using the casualties caused each fire versus combining casualties for a single check but I haven't done the math. I know there are acceptions.

Say for example in Turn based you fire four times at a unit causing 1 casulty each time with one fire being a rear shot. You would have three checks using 1/26 chance but the third would a check with a modifier. In the case of phased play this would be combined into a single test of 4/26 chance with a modifier.
