Just thinking aloud - now that artillery can fire by prolongue, would it be easily possible to allow infantry units to fire and then back up a hex (even in non-clear terrain, possibly)? Would help fighting withdrawals a bit.

That would be a lot like the Finn ski troop tactic in the Russo-Finnish War of 1939...they would fire and back up contiually making it very difficult for the Russians to pin them down. "Scoot and Shoot" as is now the modern tactic. Wondering if what you are proposing was a "regular" tactic in the ACW? Though I am sure that it was done on some occasions. Could have a rather "gamey flavor" to it. I am not as versed in ACW history as many of you are so I would welcomed being enlightened as to this tactic if I am making an incorrect assumption.

To counter 'gamey tactics', instead of allowing infantry to fire and back up, how about giving mounted cavalry the ability to move after firing? (I'm thinking 1/2 of thier movement to fire.)

That would give the armies a solid scouting and rearguard force, justifying, in game terms, the victory points assigned.

I was thinking more along the lines of rearguards and fighting withdrawals - basically trying to make it easier to defend. Of course, the obvious answer is to play in phases. [8D]
