Just saw on the news northern England is experiencing horrific flooding! Pictures of a large bridge washed out, and reports of something like 12" of rain in a 24 hour time frame. A 45 year old Police officer swept to his death during the night when a bridge on the river Derwent near Workington in Cumbria collapsed. A very solidly built double arched brick bridge that had stood for decades on the normally modest flowing Derwent. A confirmed 8 inches of rain fallen overnight in some areas with a number of people missing. A RNLI Lifeboats spokesman described conditions as "very challenging"...such a description from that source can be taken as a clear indicator that the flooding is very bad indeed. Scotland as well. Major flooding, bridges out, fields now ponds. Our village bridge re-opened on Thursday (at least one lane did) after 2 weeks, so the 1 mile trip to the next village no longer involves a 30-mile detour. [8] But our worst days weren't as bad as what people down south have gotten the last couple of days. And back home in North Carolina, my mother tells me they received 5" of rain one day last week.
