Post subject:  Looking for input for Strategic games

Gentlemen,

I currently have the American Civil War version III: Sumter to Appomattox and I am looking for a more modern version of the strategic level Civil War to play. I am looking at The American Civil War (AGEOD), The Forge of Freedom (Matrix games), and The War Between the States (Gery Gisby's). Are there any problems or benefts of one verses the others? I would like to hear from people who have these games int he club. I have read the reviews posted in verious places, but could not finad any from our club.

Thank you.

Each takes on the War from a different "view point". So here is how I list them from least to most complex.

War Between the States - is a high level strategic presentation of the war. With one month turns, a reaction phase, and limited production it is the easiest to learn and lends itself well to PBEM. You can finish the war in a reasonable time. Simplicity of course is also its drawback. The map is divided up into a limited number of regions which limits what you can do in the main theaters of the war (Tennessee and Virginia).

Forge of Freedom - takes a step up in complexity requiring the player to handle production details. It has been a long time since I played this one so I can't give much comment on it. It has one interesting feature the other games don't, a tactical level game for resolving battles. Unfortunately, the tactical game can't be used in PBEM games so is primarially a solitare benefit.

AGEOD's ACW is by far the most complex of the three and requires some time to master it game system. It has two week turns using a Plot and Go system. It handles production rather abstractly. It's combat system is complex but resolved somewhat as a blackbox. You don't always know why you won or lost. It has the most detail handling of supply and supply lines of the three games. It also has the most complex handling of leaders and force make up. Coupled with the most complex and detail map treatment it probably the best simulation of the war on the strategic level since Sumter to Appomattox published.

Kennon gives a good description of the games. I've never played Forge of Freedom so can't say much about it. I'd recommend Grigsby's WBTS as a quicker to play and easier to learn game that has some depth and challenge to it. If you want, to me, the best strategic level game, go with the AGEOD game. Two week turns, pretty sophisticated leadership and supply rules, and a lot of options for game play. It has an odd PBEM system but once you get used to it you will get along fine.

Gentlemen,

The American Civil War (AGEOD) is on Order. After I figure out how to beat the AI I will be prowling around for a Confederate Opponent [:D] Thank you Gentlemen.
