I could consult the manual for this answer but thought I may get better answers here. If you have some units in battle line is it better to place them in wooded terrain with elevated ground to their front that is clear (thus giving your men the wooded terrain bonus but giving the enemy the high ground) or is it better to fight them in the open on level terrain?

Hi, Colonel,

That depends on a lot of things. I think woods always provides -40% fire protection. I think higher terrain provides a -10% or -20% protection per level. But higher terrain also provides a melee advantage, which woods do not. Also, higher terrain provides better observation of the rest of the map and greater fields of fire, particularly for rifled artillery. Of course, if your woods is directly behind the crest of a ridge, they will be shielded from fire. So reverse slope defense isn't a bad idea, if you are playing phase. If you are playing turn, it isn't such a good idea, because a lot of defenders won't fire when the attacker moves adjacent and fires his stacks at you. Hope this helps.
