After Action Report –CSA Western Theater Junior Officers Ball

Well gents it was a most damn fine evening of dance and socialising, which brought a tear or two to this here old officers eyes - seeing all the young folk having such fun. It was also pleasing to see that this year there was no gun fire in the ball room, only in the ablutions area – this may be due to spicy food rather than firearms

I would like to also like to take the opportunity to thank the follow persons/groups ;
• Mrs Miggin’s and her crew for providing such fine after match entertainment for the senior officers
• General Meyer who contributed most of the liquid refreshments
• Nicodemus for being the bouncer and in house crowd control – fine effort young man/crocodile
• The CSA Women Home Baking Division
• ZZ Top and AC/DC, great slow dancing music

There were four minor blots on the evening’s proceedings and they are listed below in order of horribleness;
• Some large ladies tried to gate crash the ball, screaming we love Lieutenant Hawkins – it took Nicodemus more than a few bites to get rid of them
• Some shady looking character called Drex Vader tried to gain entry – some CSA Spooks came and dragged him away.
• General Meyer turned up with some lady on his arm called Grace Huntington, we let the general in alone
• General Stiles turned up with a regiment of Hooters Zouaves, we let the Zouaves in alone

It can’t be a ball without statistics:

• Proposals of Marriage – 38
• Proposals of Marriage formalised in the light of day – 8
• The largest calibre weapon confiscated at the door - a 20lb Parrot, union officers always over do things
• The number of suspect displays of ankle checked by General Strickler – 128
• The number of Ferrets stopped from entering the ballroom before 0100 hrs - 75

So I must say – well done one and all <salute>

I found the affair to be a very gratifying and relaxing experience, even though I endured many slights and remarks upon the color of my uniform. But these became less and less noticeable as the evening wore on.

I was especially relieved when Miss Huntington was initially accosted at the door by that small man, Gunter, who immediately captivated her by jumping up upon his pony and holding a handmirror over her head. So taken was she by this unexpected act that she completely forgot me; and when last I looked the two of them seemed oblivious to the world, walking hand-in-hand towards the woods. Nor was she anywhere to be found when I prepared to leave the following afternoon. (I left her trunks and baggage there by the hitching rails.)

I am afraid that I may have unduly left the impression that all further Confederate extravaganzas of this sort would be supplied with Union liquor. Far from it! Had I not been so distracted and preoccupied with the glumy Miss Huntington, I should have more properly prevented the unseemly theft of the twenty-three wagons of spirits pilfered from the D. C. Dispensary. Yet there was something of a pleasing attitude generated within me by all of the Southern officers as they continually offered me private salutes and praises upon the smooth quality and faint smokey taste of their drinks.

Finally, it must be due to the unfailing generosity of General McOmish, that I discovered within my pants the next morning the business cards of at least seven of the ladies who were at first refused entrance due to failing General Strickler's rigid ankle inspection. I later learned that some of these ladies did gain entrance after General Strickler had developed a horrible back pain from all of the bending down and measuring he was doing and was forced to spend the rest of the evening lying down in the "red parlor!" And it is tribute to the total involvement of the ambiance of the ball (and probably all that Union liquor) that I cannot remember the particular circumstances that led to Mrs. Miggin's seductive and partial disrobing conducted for a select, boisterous group of junior officers in the hat room!

It is well that these gatherings are so rare, lest we grow too fond of them!

Nicodemus is still recovering from his run in with the stampeding horde, however I believe he managed to snatch a Yankee pack horse as compensation.

<salute>...First I would like to Thank our Honorable Host.. General Cam McOmish and his Men for throwing a "Fine Party"......My Staff and I had a Wonderful time!.....

My Sisters had quite a few men ask for their hands on the Dance floor as well as private Doll making lessons (Which i Objected to unless properly Chaperoned).

As for the Women pursuing me I was taken aback by the Size of them :oops: Standing on the line in the mist of Shot and Shell i never had problem....but when approached by these Ladies i must say i was Little Afraid. At one point (when Nicodemus took a potty break) I Asked Gunter to step in for fear of my life....Luckily there was a stool nearby...and he did manage to fend them off . :mrgreen: After this incident i didn't see him the whole night :oops:
Later finding out that the Lovely Miss Huntington was fully occupying his attention...(Was fine with me he needed the Break)....alto ugh he did have trouble with carrying around that Mirror however small it was... I must say i was surprised to see her the next day on the Back of Gunter's pony...(Poor animal)...heading back to my HQ. :( Hopefully he can keep her under control!

I was alittle taken back to see Blue Bellies around the Punch Bowel.....but once the Whiskey was a Flowing......and the Big Women were looking better.....I had no more problem.
I would like to say a Special Thank You to Nicodemus for Looking after me...it was Much Appreciated.......
