Gentlemen, While still in my training game, I was curious as to what other members thought about a certain topic. I want to start a conversation/debate as to what battle and or Campaign was the most influential of the Civil War ? and more importantly, why you feel this way? Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks Generals!!! |

To be sure, I think that we've undertaken a discussion along these general lines before, although I don't think the descriptive term of "influential" has been used! I'll take a stab at it and say that, if influential may be defined as influential to the art and technique of war, then the classic meeting of the Monitor and Merrimac must be considered. But you also asked for a battle or campaign, which might infer a ground action. So I will add that I think that the battle of Shiloh exerted a great influence upon both sides that the American Civil War was not only going to be a much longer, sustained effort than what they had envisioned, but also a more horribly priced prospect! Great to have one of our cadets from the UMA make himself heard on these boards! My compliments, Cadet Whalen! Please give my personal regards to your Instructor! |

General Meyer Sir, All the Credit has to go to General Sands. He is quite an excellent instructor and a gentleman as well. I have to agree at least land battle wise, Shiloh was a devastation for the CSA especially, with the loss of A.S. Johnston. I think he might have been THE most underrated General of the war as brief as a stint that he did have. |

Here Here...What General Meyer said Suh!.....To bad you weren't Born South of the Masion Dixxon...  I think Even the Hunley...first operation Submarine....Cold Harbor......"Trench Warfare".....But Gettysburg must have been the What if....... If Lee would have moved to the Right and made Meade attack him on Grounds of their Choosing.....Who Knows....

I am afraid I will have to go with the Atlanta Campaign and fall of Atlanta. It kept Lincoln in office more than any other single factor. And Lincoln was the will behind the North for never backing down from the war. |

Agree with Kennon, the confederacy could not last long with the loss of either Atlanta or Richmond. As the two areas that held the bulk of the machinery of war when both were finally lost the war was essentially over, only to last long enough for the dust to settle. |
