Given that the capacity of supply wagons is the same whether using Phase or Turn-based, it seems a fundamental flaw. Turn-based play will produce a greater frequency of fire, which is the sole criterion for ammo change for a unit. It seems as though the ammo capacity of supply wagons should be about double for Turn-based play. Do players find themselves frequently running short -- or out of -- ammo in Turn-based?

General Frost <salute>

Suh, my compliments!

As a Confederate commander I frequently find myself running "short -- or out of -- ammo". Doesn't seem to bother you Yanks when that happens

General Hebert,

No, it does not bother us Yankee types at all. I am sure you can always find a few stones to throw our way, however.

Actually, that's when the manure from the stables comes in handy

Origin of the stink bomb, no doubt.

I don't particularly care for Turn based play. Has many more problems than supply but it is one of them. My solution is to set the AI to minimum fire distance for both small arms and artillery. I only reset it to medium distance (long for small arms) when I know the other side is going to be moving large number of troops close to mine.

Because of the halving and random selection of range to fire at most artillery and infantry fire the AI makes is a waste of ammo. For all practical purposes there is no Defensive Fire in Turn play. It is particularly a Rebel problem since the Union player usually has enough ammo to waste on the ineffective AI fire.

In the original Talonsoft games there was no such thing as automated defensive fire. It became an option early on though. I wonder if any of the designers design still design their games with manual defensive fire in mind when allotting ammunition. It certainly seems so. Of course, in turn-based you really don't have a choice, but like General Whitehead I avoid turn-based, and for the same reasons.
