Clash of Titans The Story Begins General Robert E. Lee had kept it a secret for as long as he could, but the cheers and loud shrieks of the “Rebel Yell” had carried across the bloody fields of Gettysburg like a hymn from an inspired church congregation. Stonewall Jackson (minus an arm) road up behind the lines of General Jubal Early's hard pressed men and as an aging John B Gordon recalled decades later, “It was like a breath of fresh air and 10,000 reinforcements all rolled into one.” That had been over two months past and the ANV was back in Virginia again. The news of Jackson's recovery and arrival on the field had indeed bolstered his men, but not brought the overwhelming victory Lee so desperately needed. Now President Jefferson Davis had ordered Lee to come to Richmond for a meeting. As General Lee mounted Traveler and took the reins from a young private in an all too clean and pressed uniform he recounted the meeting and its momentous revelations. “Longstreet is probably right you know” began Davis “Modern armies unless surrounded and besieged are nigh on indestructible”. That is how the meeting began as Davis outlined his decisions and how they would affect the general and the rest of the military arm of the Confederacy. Davis was promoting General Lee to commander of all Southern ground forces (or what was left in early September 1863). Davis needed someone who could coordinate the remaining Southern forces and at least the generals will listen to him stated Davis in an exasperated tone. Fortunately the losses in Pennsylvania had not been as heavy as earlier battles and the ANV had retreated back to Virginia in good order with over 62,000 men in the ranks and wagon trains full of supplies from the bounty of Pennsylvania and Maryland. The Army of Tennessee was not as fortunate in its condition, moral or for that matter leadership. That was the other major revelation by the President half way through the meeting. “My friend Bragg must be replaced before we lose Georgia and Alabama with hardly a shot fired the way he lost Chattanooga and Pemberton lost Vicksburg” exclaimed the President bitterly. Lee simply nodded his head in agreement. He knew what was coming next and now as Traveler turned to carry Lee back to his proud army he pondered the future....... President Lincoln had sent a personal telegram to General Meade praising the AOP for its heroic stand at Gettysburg and urging him to press on to Virginia after the elusive Rebel army. Meade had done so, but of course (like all former commanders of the AOP) it took him 6 weeks to travel the 87 miles. “Well at least they didn't lose the battle” mumbled Lincoln. Lee with Longstreet and the miraculously recovered Jackson was back in Virginia and the status quo had been re-established. The President knew there was only one way to end this war and one man he could trust to bring it to the desired conclusion. None of that matters now thought Lincoln. Spies and informants had brought the news as it crept out of every corner of Richmond. Something was up. Gen. Lee had been seen in Richmond. Lincoln knew Lee would not travel to Richmond with his army and the AOP separated by only a few short miles unless President Davis had insisted upon the meeting or even ordered it. The loss of Chattanooga on the heels of the fall of Vicksburg was catastrophic for the South and Lincoln had spent countless hours wondering what Davis' reaction would be. Now it appeared Davis had made a decision. What would it be? Lincoln considered the most recent news. Bragg had been reinforced with units from Knoxville and whole brigades where now back in the field after paroles had been exchanged as a result of the surrender at Vicksburg. Unlike other Southern generals Bragg was becoming predictable due to a lack of supplies and troops to face off against Rosecrans. The South simply could not afford another Stones River, a pyrrhic victory if there ever was one. The Army of Tennessee had replaced some of its losses, but had remained a minor threat to Rosecrans movements until now. Reinforced and probably resupplied from the depot in Knoxville lest those supplies be lost to an advancing General Burnside, the Army of Tennessee was now a real threat again. But Bragg, that was the question, thought Lincoln. What would Davis do about Bragg.......... For the rest of the story and to learn about the winter tournament, click on this link. Gentlemen, Sirs! <salute> There might be a bit of confusing regarding the start date of the tournament! We will be doing the pairing draw on December 10th and then the tournament will start. To date we have 30 Yanks and 27 Rebs signed up. Three options are available: 1. a 23 turn custom scenario, 2. a 40 turn custom scenario or 3. you can do both!
