5. This may be the 1860s but both armies have the strongest and fastest flag wavers in history. One man sitting on a mountaintop can immediately tell the rest of the army what he sees, so take advantage of it. But stick to club rules [Rule 5.1.2] and don’t use commanders as scouts out in front of your lines (unless all participants agree to allow this).

What might should be changed in the game is to allow commanders who are off along "scouting" to be killed more easily. Think of Phil Kearny at Chantilly. He went o'scouting and didn't come back. Or A.P. Hill at Five Forks, or wherever it was he killed outside Petersburg, near the end of the war.

Love your tips by the way.

The commanders (if by themselves) are supposed to be behind the lines in safe territory and not out scouting in front of the lines. That means that it is the judgement of the General in Chief who is operating the key board that he will be safe by himself. Occasionally, the opposing General in Chief does sneak somebody back there undetected and gets themselves a commander. Once overtaken, a commander is mighty easy to take out (a one man unit can overrun them). Trying to shoot them out of the saddle is a bit more difficult. Some of them can look like Annie Oakley shooting and dodging from horseback at a Wild West Carnival. Personally, I would have a long list of higher priorities for the programmers/game designers to work on. We'll eventually cover a bunch of them.

I think I just discovered this. I hadn't known it possible.
