I'm well into my fourth WBTS game this year and enjoying the hell out of it. I wonder why it never really caught on. Any comments?

Is there anything that can be done to pique some interest? Matrix has it on sale for $9.60!!!

Well it was just the scale/scope of the game that didn't catch me. CW2 from AGEod, despite all it's lacks, was just suited better for me.

It looked like a game that I would like, and so I bought it (not for as little as $9.60), then studied it a little bit, and played my first opponent. Regretfully, the only thing that I learned from playing the opponent was that I didn't know how to play it. I learned nothing from that first encounter and so I put it in the back of a drawer and it has remained there. It looked like a good game if one takes the time to learn how to use it.

What lacks in CWII? It's the game which brought me here after I spent a summer learning it. After my training session I found no one was playing it or WBTS.

I strongly miss any evolution of the brigades. You get mixed brigades with 6lb early what should evolve into inf, cav, art only brigades quickly. Still we are stuck with early mixed brigades, that also are the most numerous to use, until the end of the war. That field was not covered at all.
There is also a thread that covers this at the AGEod forum:

I got Gary Grigsby's WBTS. I thought he made it more complicated than it needed to be. But that is Gary Grigsby. Got War in the East a long time ago when I was a lot younger and enjoyed it, but there was a lot under the hood I never understood. By the time WBTS came out I lacked the patience to master it. Didn't help that the computer monitor at the time made it hard to see things. Anyway, I think this Armchair General review does a pretty good job of explaining it.

Haven't tried WBTS, bought CWII several years ago, was turned off by all the political junk in the game. Don't currently have any JTS games on my wish list, thinking about trying out WBTS for the Matrix Xmas sale price.

IMHO the Best ACW strategic game ever produced was The Civil War by Victory, a friend and I spent many an all day Black Friday session playing ti while the wives were shopping. I wish someone would produce a pc version of that game system.

Hi, Ken,

I looked this up:

"Avalon Hill released a computer version of Civil War in 1988. In a 1993 survey of pre 20th-century strategy games Computer Gaming World gave the game zero-plus stars out of five, stating that it "shows how one can take a highly playable boardgame and turn it into an unplayable computer 'product' [with] incomplete rules, incomplete graphics and incomplete programming". The magazine noted that Avalon Hill did not ship a promised update."

I actually had this version as well as the board game. It was a real shame Avalon Hill did not do the computer version properly, as it had real promise.

You might be interested in the remake designed by Mark Simonitch (my brother) for GMT games. He and I played the original many many times and he liked it so much he eventually redesigned and published it.
