The time capsule found in the R. E. Lee Monument has been opened!
[See here for a video https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1jMJgeMLBYXKL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1475889448567066624%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aljazeera.com%2Fnews%2F2021%2F12%2F28%2Fus-experts-open-time-capsule-discovered-in-robert-e-lee-statue.]

In 1887 The Richmond Dispatch reported on the contents of the box [see the bottom of the fourth column here - https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85038614/1887-10-26/ed-1/seq-1/. It seems that everything listed has been found (and more) including a battle flag and 'compass and square' symbol made from the tree over General T. J. Jackson's grave.

Yes it is.

The first one was believed to be placed there by one of the masons who helped build the pedestal (there was major water damage to its contents). This one just opened is the official one placed in the cornerstone over 130 years ago.
